Beulah School - Wilsted Street - St Pancras
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 12:14 BST (UK) »
I've been trying to solve this mystery for some time now!

At the marriage of my 2g-grandparents Samuel CROSS and Mary Ann ALLUM (1 Jun 1851, Bethel Chapel, St Pancras) one of the witnesses signed as follows...

Wm Sadler Beulah School Wilsted Street

At least that's the best I can make of it!

I've been through the whole of Wilsted Street in 1851 and can't find any mention of a school. However, there is a William SADLER and family...

34 1/2 (half) Wilsted Street
William SADLER Head Marr 49  Cabinet Carver born Spitafields
Ann SADLER Wife Marr 46 no occupation born St Marylebone
Eliza SADLER Dau Unm 21 School Mistress born St Marylebone
Emma SADLER Dau Unm 19 Upholsterer born St Marylebone
William SADLER Son Unm 14 Scholar born St Marylebone
Jemima SADLER Dau Unm 11 Scholar born St Marylebone
Jane SADLER Dau Unm 9 Scholar born St Marylebone

Eliza was a School Mistress. Is it simply that she was running her own private day school? Would it have to be registered somewhere?

I still don't know why William was a witness at this marriage.

Best regards,
John

Hi John

Don't know if I can shed much light really.  But I assume from your "best that you can make of it" that the cert info for the witness is unclear?  My first thought was could it, instead of Beulah, be Bethel School?

Also on this 1862 map here http://www.motco.com/Map/81006/ Wilsted Street there is a British School and a British and Foreign School close to Wilstead Street and the Bethel Chapel.  Could this British School be a possibility instead of Beulah School?  There are other schools in the area so maybe worth panning around a bit from Wilstead Street?

It appears that William Sadler, wife plus Elizabeth and Jane are living in Chalton Street in 1861 (a few streets away from Wilsted St).  William is noted as a Master Baker.

I have had several cases where witnesses on marriage certs were not particularly related to the couple.  For instance, one turned out to be the grave digger at the church where the ceremony took place, another turned out to live on the same street but appears to be nothing more than a friend perhaps.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Regards
Jonathan

Hello Jonathan,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions, and the map link. That's going to keep me busy for a while. I've attached a scan of the witnesses - not sure if it's going to work as I can't insert an image and see a preview of it.

I've seen William SADLER and family in 1861. Bit of a jump from Cabinet maker to Master Baker!

Best regards,
John

Hi John

Well it does look like Beulah School doesn't it.  Unless someone else has any other opinions.

Samuel appears to be a bootmaker if I've tracked the correct family, so no common occupation.

Are you tracing Mr Sadler for a particular reason if I may ask?  Sorry if I'm being nosey  ;)

Regards
Jonathan

Hello Jonathan,

Samuel CROSS was a Bootmaker's Shopman in 1861, born Gosport. They are at 36 Chichester Place, St Pancras.

I'm hoping Mr SADLER will give me a clue to the origins of Samuel's father, also Samuel CROSS. I'm pretty short of them! The other witness is his Widow. She was working as a Servant - Nurse for a SMITH family in Grooms Hill, Greenwich in 1851. She was born as Ann WILLY in 1798 South Petherton, Somerset, and disappears until 1881 in the Aged Pilgrims Asylum in Islington.

This is the first marriage certificate I've encountered that gives witnesses addresses.

Best regards,
John

Hi, there is mention of a member of the Cross family in an Old Bailey trial of  11 Jan 1827 , see
http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_sessions/T18270111.html
JOHN THOMPSON was indicted for stealing, on the 6th of January, 2 shoes, value 10s. , the goods of Joseph Moore .
HARRIET MOORE . I am the wife of Joseph Moore , a shoe-maker - we live in Chichester-place, Gray's-inn-road. On the 6th of January, between three and four o'clock, while I was in the parlour, the prisoner came into the shop - I went in, and he said he came from Captain Cross - a lady named Cross lodged with me; I told him to go to the private door, and immediately he left the shop door I missed these shoes; I opened the door, and saw he was going away without knocking at the private door; I called to him to come back, but he did not - I ran and took hold of him, with this pair of shoes under his jacket.
RICHARD COOPER . I am an officer. I was in Gray's-inn-lane, and saw this lady calling the prisoner - she took the shoes from him, and I secured him.
Prisoner. I was very drunk, and did not know what I was doing.
RICHARD COOPER . He was perfectly sober.
GUILTY . Aged 52.
Transported for Seven Years .
