got my first batch of hot matches through and have so far found 4 definite links to my tree (excluding direct relations discussed above >:(), replies from 3 and another 10 or so which especially look promising. Not bad since I only paid my dues on thursday

up graded on GR last saturday after a month or so not bothering with it (there is no appeal to this site unlike Rootschat) and within 24 hrs had a positive reply from an unknown rellie (well to me she is). Turns out that we "share" the same ggg grandparents and are now sharing info.

My feeling about the Hot Matches is that it's definitely worth it.

I find GR an incredibly tedious and uninteresting site - it's difficult to send emails to people and it's badly organised BUT it's the only place I've found other members of my family tree, apart from 2 in the very early days on Rootsweb.

Since the Hot matches arrived, I've found several relatives. Admittedly most of them don't want to know me, or take information without giving any back, but, as a system, it does work ::)

My concern is that, since my GR tree is now distinctly decrepit, I ought to update it. Unless things have changed, the only way of doing this is to delete it and reload it.

Does this mean I shall have to go through all those pages and pages of John and Mary Browns againand delete them before I can get back to any useful matches?   :P :P :P

Has anyone tried this?

Hi, I have made three or four definite contacts on GR - including a second cousin (twice removed?) who sent me all sorts of photos of relatives - including one of myself! and a branch of the family we have had no contact with since a great Aunt's funeral. :)

I had a confirmation of a birthplace last week, which sent my tree all out of kilter :-[ - had to delete one line back to 1700 and put in the new ancestors, which go back even further! :D

They have a 'new' family tree builder now. (As don't know how long ago  you set yours up Angela)
It didn't take me too long - considering I had to refer to the new branch every entry as I was unfamiliar with it. ::)

The Hot matches - if they don't put a place or a date, I mean even a county entered is better than nothing, they are not of interest.

Two contacts this week - one a one-name study which will be looking for birth/marriage for me and the other a possible contact to my Monmouth lot.

I had a look on GR last night, go to the Import/Export Tree link, seems you no longer have to delete your old tree in order to update to a new one  :)

Well folks and Suey in particular,

I exported a GEDCOM from my PC here, after making sure living people were protected and then tried GR's smart new facility for uploading it without deleting the old one. Selected the file, clicked on the button ........ and ........

NOTHING!

It does say it might take a few minutes and then a message will appear. I've been waiting over an hour and nothing has happened. It doesn't look like anything is going to either  :'( - (no busy icon or anything.......)

Has anyone else had any success with this?

Over the last 6 months it has been variable. there was a period when you couldn't delete, and a time when you couldn't upload.

Forst thing I found was do this at a time the net is not busy - the earlier in the mroning the better

Otherwise contact GR and see what they say

Hi Bob

Thanks for that - I've just emailed GR and will have another go with the upload first thing in the morning, just in case.

Fingers crossed......

Angela and I have been in contact by PM -  My Gedcom went through fine but I only had about 600 names, a few less now because I have deleted the names that I thought should not appear in public.

Had major problems with the 'edit individual' but in the end found that if you go through the extra details section which appears above the individuals name that seems to do the trick.
