Hot matches on Genes Reunited
« on: Friday 16 September 05 21:44 BST (UK) »
Has anyone had their GR Hot matches refreshed yet?

It is supposed to happen every 14 days but despite clearing out all the dross from the first batch I haven't had any new names yet and when I queried it with GR they told me their technical team was looking into the problem!

I'm a bit fed up with it.  It seems that the 'hot matches' are simply 'same names' with no regard to date of birth.  This might be okay but if your tree contains just one John Smith (or similar) as mine does, then you need to plough through loads of useless info.

To be honest - although I think hot matches are probably a good idea - I still use 'name summary' set to the last 3/4 days and check it a couple of times a week.  Mainly because a lot of the names I am 'doing' at the moment are in the M and T range.

Hi

I read this thread this morning and tried out the hot matches.
and bingo ! I've now had a reply from someone with gggrandparents in common.

I havn't been on GR for ages as the number of surnames the same was daunting to look through. But as they had done the work for me - I tried each one and found two possible hits.

One has replied with brilliant results. I have had a really good Sunday  ;D

It seems a familiar theme that technical people at GR are looking into it.

First inability to import larger gedcom files
(seems to be fixed)

Then temperamental exporting of gedcom files
(best to try this in the wee hours when the internet is less busy)

Now the hot matches - Yes I had notice a lack of updating here

I hadn't looked at the hot matches till yesterday and like Mary I found a likely match so contacted her. I got a reply today and we share the same x3 great grandparents. This one was the top match with 4 matching names.

I have to say that I've been lucky, and have "found" at least 4 or 5 other family connections before this in this site but have also found it quite tedious trawling through the surnames so I think it's a good idea and hope that they sort the gliches out soon.

Same here.  I cleared my first batch of 5 pages on 5 September and I'm still waiting for more.

Latest from GR is that they are running the programme to update hot matches from today so hopefully it won't be long before we get a new batch to work on.

Good News. The first batch gave me three positive contacts. Can't wait for the update. A lot of people bag GR, but I have found most of my contacts there. I always point them to RootsChat of course.
