PRIOR/PIPER families in Sudbury
« on: Friday 21 October 05 16:49 BST (UK) »
Have just returned from Sudbury looking at the streets my ancestors lived in in19th century. I would be very interested to hear from anyone researching the Prior or Piper families who were mostly silk weavers in Sudbury. By the turn of the century most had either gone to London or Colchester. THey wer e very large families  and I do have a fair bit if info so please contact.

Hi  Sue
We saw Sudbury in the sunshine. A pity about all the traffic-could do with a by-pass.Enyoyed our walk round  and looking at some of the old buildings--gave a feel to the place. It probably meant more because I had so many roads etc to look at. Pictures of old Sudbury helped too. Glad we did not stay in the town but at Long Melford. I think 2 days was enough.

Hi Ringrose,

My husbands ancestors the "PIPER's" came form Sudbury and the were both Silk Weavers.
Maria Wiffen married Stephen Piper 05 March 1838.
They had 4 children John, Henry, Robert and Maria.

Maria (Wiffen) Piper died 21 march 1857 and is buried at All Saints Church cemetery in Sudbury.

Stephen Pipers parents were John and Ann (Dread) Piper who were married 12 February 1797.
His parents were John and Mary (Griggs) Piper who were married 18 September 1756 at All Saint in Sudbury.

I have been trying to put all these Pipers, with their children into some kind of order.

Stephen Piper and his children left Sudbury in Suffolk on the 05 November 1857 on the sailing ship the "Persian". He and his family resided at Latrobe on the NorthWest coast of Tasmania and took up farming. He died 10 December 1902 age 90 years. Stephen Piper was my husbands G. G. Grandfather.

I am looking forward in hearing from you soon.

Take care

Wendy

Mine were silk weavers too and lived in Church St Gregory St and Cross St. George Piper b 1805 son of John and Elizabeth married Mary Ann Elvin in 1828 at All Saints. Thei children were  Geotge 1828,Alfred1830,Mary Ann(my link)1833, Hannah1834, Eliza 1836,Charles1840,James1842,John1849,William/Maria1847 and Harriett (d 1857 age 6)Alfred went to Glemsford and Charles to Great Bardfield.I do have some Piper records for All Saints and St Gregory and I may be able to help you.

Hi Ringrose,  ;)

Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner than this but life for me got a little hectic before xmas as relations were coming that my husband hadn't seen in 30 years.

I had down that John Piper (who married Ann Dread) parents were John Piper and Mary Griggs, but now I am not quite sure.
John Piper who married Mary Griggs had a son John, but I  now believe that, this John Piper married Elizabeth Martin.

I also found out that Maria Piper lived in Cross Street and across the road is Church Street where All Saints is situated.

Do you have any info on the marriages of a George Piper who was chr. 26 Jan 1845 and his brother Charles Piper who was chr. 30 July 1845 who's parents were Thomas Piper and Hannah Hazle?

I think George's wife was Esther and Charles's wife was Sarah, but I dont know who they were apart from that or when they got married!

Most of my Piper attended All Saints and a few of them attended  St Gregory Church.

Would like to hear from you again soon, in the mean time take care

Wendy

Although I do have a Charles and a George Piper  the parents were George and Mary Piper.who married in1828 at All Saints. I do not know any of the siblings of George --the link could be through them. They were all in the same area  Cross Street, Church Lane , Gregory Street. They must have known each other. We probably need to go back a generation. Your lot may have been aunts uncles or cousins.

Hi

I have just found your interest in Pipers and wondered if anyone can help me.

My Great, great, great, great grandfather was John Piper who I know lived in Beyton as a blacksmith he married Susan Cornfield 19 July 1807 in Stoke by Nayland and died 24 March 1847 in Beyton
There is no reference to them in Beyton prior to him being there and wondered if they could have come from Sudbury.
I have still to check but have found a John Piper born 1773, St Gregory Sudbury whose parents were Thomas & Susanna. I know I am clutching at straws a bit but he had a daughter named Susanna!!!!

If anyone can shed any light I would be so pleased. My Father, whose family it is, will be 90 in april so trying to trace as much for him as possible

many thanks

Hi Pretoria
My Pipers were the offspring of a George amd Mary Piper(nee Elven) All were born in Sudbury between 1828 and 1850.They were silk weavers. Georges parentage I believe was a John Piper and an Elizabeth . I think John was born in 1768 maybe in Sudbury. I also thinkhe remarried  after Elizabeths death in 1810 to a Hannah. There are so many Pipers in Sudbury and surrounding areas it is often hard to find the link you want.
Sorry to be of little use.
