Hi Fern,
Thanks for that info.  I don't know if there is any connection, but I have added it to my "Possible" Folder.
God bless you.

Hi everyone,
Well my ancestors fit into a couple of the Regiments mentioned.

Thomas Pegum was a Fencible and part of the 86th Regiment. He too came to NZ on the Ramillies in 1847.
He was a drunk as was his wife Bridget. The drink was the cause of both their deaths.
Bridget died from exposure after being locked outide while drunk. Thomas from drinking ardent spirits.

My Henry Samways was in the 65th Regiment aka Hickety Pips.
There is a book at my local library which has info regarding the regiments of the NZ Wars.
If anyone would like me to look up a soldier I am more then happy to do that.

Hi Belinda,
The more I read of the Fencibles, the more I realize that drink was a big problem for most of them.
Life must have been pretty hard for them, I think

Hi there,

You may like to get in touch with a lady called Shirely Kendall, her specialty is the Fencibles. I dont have a an address off hand but Im sure someone at the Howick villiage will be able to assist, if not she has got postings on other message boards online.

Also check out this link, and perhaps email the archivist.
