Hi Lyn,

No one has had a look to see how many Wallaces were in Co. Antrim during the time of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. This may be of some assistance to you in tracing descendents of the ones you have at the moment and enable you to find a distant cousin.  I appear to have distant cousins on this site and would love to meet them in person some time. I think Billy may be a bit far out for the Wallaces you are seeking. Unless my memory eludes me completely the James Wallace I met was originally from the Billy area. I think this area is just outside Bushmills on the road to Ballycastle past the Citroen garage as you go out of Bushmills. Maybe someone who knows the area will confirm this information. I have put Co. Antrim Wallaces on my favourites list and will make a note for you of the areas where the Wallace who worked as Steward to Lord Massereene may have been born.

Sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you, but it has been a holiday weekend here & I had visitors, so not much time for the computer.

Thanks for that reading.  I had a look at the cemetery sites in Billy, but they appear to be unrelated.  I have not had time to check out the Messereenes yet, but will get to it.

The great news is that I have made a breakthrough with the Stewart line at last!!  A contact I have in Scotland is going to go to Glasgow to check it out for me in the next few weeks, so I am just awaiting his confirmation.  One down about five to go!! That is the only response so far to "My Brick Walls", but a good one.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it.
Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply.
I did not receive your PM.  It seems to have got lost somewhere along the line between there & NZ.
I do not know Ireland's geography at all, so have no idea where Billy is, but I had already checked the cemetery sites that Annie gave me.
The info I have came from a late cousin who spent quite a bit of time and money researching our tree.  She had a couple of professional researchers working the Ireland end.
I have completely lost one branch of the family.  My cousin couldn't find them either.
3 brothers, Arthur, James & John A. McK. Wallace (Sons of William wallace & Catherine McKane), came to New Zealand in 1846 with the 65th Regiment.  I have a lot of stuff on John & Arthur & their descendants....have added about 600 names to my cousins original work, but cannot find what happened to James when he bought out of the army in 1849.  He just seemed to have vanished.  I am beginning to wonder if he didn't go back to Ireland.   I also would love to know what happened to his parents and brother & sister.  I am ever the optimist!  If I don't try, I will never know.
I could not find the post to Steve that you mentioned.  Who is he looking for?  And where do I find The Griffiths Valuation?
Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I was born & raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario not far from the site of the Lundy's Lane battle. I suggest you contact the Niagara Falls library. They have a very good local history section & may have some Wallace data, maybe even a grave listing. Next try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for Thomas. I've found that even after you think you have everything about one individual there's still more.

The 65th [Yorkshire North Riding] Regiment of Foot

Nicknames: 'The Royal Tigers' and 'Hickety Pips'.

The 65th sailed to New South Wales from England, provided guards on convict ships during 1845 and 1846. Two companies of the regiment were moved in 1846 to the Bay of Islands, but arrived after the fighting ended. Other detachments were stationed in Auckland. By 1847 the whole regiment had been moved to Wellington, a detachment of which took part in the skirmish at Horokiri. Companies of the 65th relieved the garrison of the 58th Regiment in Wanganui and took part in the fighting there. The regiment remained in garrison in Wellington and Wanganui for 14 years. The 65th Regiment was the only British regiment to serve in both the fighting in the 1840's and the 1860's.

The year 1860 saw the headquarters of the 65th Regiment based in Auckland, but in February of that year the regiment sailed to New Plymouth. It was soon in action at the 'L' Pa at Waitara, and a detachment of the 65th stormed the rifle pits at Mahoetahi. During 1861 the regiment was strongly engaged at the sieges of Huirangi and Te Arei. At the cessation of hostilities the regiment was withdrawn to Auckland where it was stationed first at Otahuhu and later at Drury. A detachment returned to New Plymouth when the Second Taranaki War broke out and were present at the storming of Katikara Pa in June 1863.

The outbreak of the Waikato War saw several companies of the regiment stationed along the Great South Road and in September 1863 a detachment of the regiment was heavily engaged at the skirmish at Camerontown. The 65th sustained losses in the unsuccessful attack on Rangiriri Pa and moved forward to Paterangi from which it advanced against the village of Rangiowhia. Detachments of the regiment were present at the action at Hairini and the siege of Orakau. In 1864 a detachment of the regiment took part in the Gate Pa battle.

The 65th Regiment remained in garrison in the Waikato and Auckland areas before sailing for England in October 1865.
