Hi Beryla

You have got a difficult family here!  I've had a look on the 1891 and 1901 using all the methods I know, for William and Ann and both children, with no success.

Do you know that Ann was still using the name Hughes in later years?  If she remarried, they could all have adopted the new surname.  Other than that, it's going to take a better detective than me to find them.

(By the way, Mary's place of birth was also Bitterley, like John.)

Sorry I can't help.
Monica

Hi Beryla

Hmm, good one this.

Here’s what I found for 1891 – surname transcribed as ‘Robert’ (don’t you just love Ancestry)

Ref: RG12/2134/95 Page 3
Address: B??rey Cottage, Edgmond, Newport

William – Servant – M – 4? – Farm Laborer – Salop, Weston???
Ann – Wife – M – 36 – Salop, Burwarton
Mary A – Daur – 14 – Salop, Bitterley
Alice – Daur – 8 – Salop, Albrighton
George – Son – 6 – Salop, Preston
Arthur – Son – 3 – Salop, Edgmond

A couple of things:
All surnames Hughes and all spellings as per census entry (where able to identify letters). For William they have put Servant instead of Head. The second figure for his age could be 0. The birth place for William as been written over in thick black and resembles Weston and then possibly three letters I can’t identify. As for the address, modern maps show a Buttery Farm in the area just south west of Adeney. Someone with local knowledge can probably sort that problem out.

By the way, I have forwarded a surname correction to Ancestry.

For 1901 we have:

Ref: RG13/2567/18 Page 23
Address: Howle, Chetwynd, Newport

William – Head – M – 50 – Teamster on Farm – Salop, Wistontoe
Ann – Wife – M – 46 – Salop, Burwerton
George – Son – S – 15 – Ag. Horse – Salop, Preston
Charles Henry – Son – 8 – Salop, Kinnersley

A couple of things:
All surnames Hughes and all spellings as per census entry (where able to identify letters). I would guess William’s birth place is supposed to be Wistanstow.

I hope this is the right family – it’s been a challenge! Hopefully someone with local knowledge can fill in the gaps for you.

Good hunting
John

Wow John -

I'm very impressed!  What a good job.

I think the cottage name is Butrey.  That would be possible with a modern name of Buttery.  I agree that William's age looks like 40.  I can't make anything from the blur following Weston.

Well done,
Monica

Hello John

Thanks so much for all you hard work and all that information.Very much appreciated. I was beginning to think I was completely stuck but thanks to all your sorting out I've got a result. I've been trying to track down Uncle Arthur for sometime and now I've got an Alice and George too!

Thanks again

Regards
