OOPs I meant look for Norman GIBBS
Mmm ... searching for the birth of Norman GIBBS presented a bit a challenge initially (because it transpired that that wasn't the surname under which his birth was registered in NZ. ) And there are some "twists" to be had for his family. (I'll try and add these in a logical sequence so you can better follow the "story").

Firstly though, the marriage notice for Mabel Rena CARTER and Norman GIBBS was published in a newspaper - and it gave the names of both fathers.
You can view this at our PapersPast website.

GIBBS - CARTER - 19 October 1904 at the residence of bride's parents, Hutcheson Street, Norman GIBBS, son of the late Robert GIBBS of Wellington, to Mabel R. Carter, 2nd daughter of G.C. CARTER of Blenheim.Robert GIBBS I suspected might be the man who married in NZ a
"Frances GORDON" in 1867. However there were no NZ births registered to this couple.
It was only when turning to PapersPast in search of Robert GIBBS, that things took a "twist".
The marriage of Robert GIBBS and Frances GORDON in 1867 was in fact bigamous, in that
Frances GORDON (otherwise known as Fanny GLOVER), had married in Christchurch (NZ) in 1861 to a Hawley William GLOVER, and he was still alive. (Three children had also been born of that union).

The newspapers of the day covered the bigamy "story" in some depth. I'll give the references to these items in next post >
