Ruck frederic walter wellington lookup please

Hi All,

Wanting info on a maternal g grandfather, Frederic Walter Ruck, in Wellington for years prior to 1911. Would appreciate a look up in the Wellington electoral roll and rate books.

Died: 20 January 1911

Profession: Clerk

Age: 63

Cause of Death:  Chronic Brights disease (kidney disease)

Died: 20 January 1911, Ohiro Home

Buried: 23 January 1911, Karori Cemetery

Other data fields blank.

Some further background: Frederic born 1847, Tulse Hill, Lambeth, Surrey. Father, John, and mother, Mary(nee Oram); it was John's second marriage.

Frederic travelled to Melbourne in 1866. Several known trips back and forth to UK followed, until he finally arrived back in Melbourne in mid 1876. His family lost direct contact with him after this.

His stated occupation changed from labourer(1866) to warehouseman(1867) to accountant(1874). After his disappearance he seems to have spent time as a comedian(1889) before becoming a clerk(1903), his occupation at the time of his death in early 1911.

In principle, he could have lived in NZ from 1877, as there's no further trace of him in Australia or the UK; my long term aim is to fill in these missing 35 years.

Apart from electoral roll and rate look ups, I'd appreciate local advice on how best to proceed. I live in UK, but make regular trips to Melbourne.

I did a quick simple search for Frederick Ruck and it came back with 1 entry.

I looked for Frederic Walter RUCK in Wellington in the 1879-80, 1878-79, and 1880-81 Electoral Rolls, but without success. I jumped forward to 1900 and found him:

1900 Electoral Roll for Wellington;
#12559 RUCK Frederic Walter, 16 Dixon Street, commission agent, residential
#12600 RUCK Phoebe, Willis Street, housekeeper, residential

1903 Electoral Roll for Wellington, page 231;
#12746 RUCK Emily Louisa, 34 Oriental Terrace, domestic duties
#12747 RUCK Frederic Walter, 219 Willis Street, commission agent
#12748 RUCK Phoebe, Willis Street, domestic duties

The term ‘domestic duties’ might (or might not) mean the individual was married, so it’s safer to assume he was not married to Phoebe RUCK until you have independent confirmation. It appears unlikely.
