Hi BJB

Welcome to Rootschat  8)

Do you have any idea where Samuel Percy was born?

FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ has a birth of a Percy Samuel Leach, March Quarter 1891 in Warwick Registration District.

If you can't find him in the censuses (I couldn't see a match in 1891 or 1901 in Leicestershire at first sight), you might have to get hold of his marriage certificate to find out his father's name.

From there on, he might be easier to spot.

Hi Tanja
Thank you for the reply,  I have made an error in his date of birth it  was 1888 or 1893 not 91, no I have no idea where Samuel was born that is the problem, his father's name was John Leach, and his occupation as quoted on Samuel's marr cert a Miller, that is all I have except Samuel' m & d.
I know he liked to be called Percy so I have looked under that name as well, he was a mier when he arried in 1915.
I do know that he lived in Loughborough in 1920 because my Mother's birth cert states the address.
The address he was living at in 1901 was empty on the night of the census so cannot get info from there.
Thank you again Tanja.
Beryl

Hi Jane
Thanks for the best wishes, but do not hold out much hope as I cannot get a small scrap to start me off.

BJB,

When you say he was born either 1888 or 1893, is it because the 2 certificates you hold (marriage and death) have him a different age?
- Age at death is obviously  :P not given by the the dead himself - was the informant a close relative?
- Age at marriage is given by the groom himself. One can of course imagine reasons for not saying the truth: when under age (shouldn't apply here) or when there's a big age difference between the 2 spouses etc.

The problem we have is that Leach is far from being a rare name  :(

What age does he state at marriage?  I'll have another look.

Tanja  :)

 :) Hi Tati

The person who reg the death was his son, Samuel's age was stated as 77yrs old, and his age at the time of marriage was 22yrs old.
He was married in 1915 at Loughborough and a miner, his father was John Leach a Miller,
His wife was Florence Ashford.
Thank you for trying to help
BJB   :)

BJB,

Just out of interest, do you know if either of the witnesses of Samuel's marriage are connected to him? Could one of the witnesses be a brother or an already married sister? I know its a very long shot, especially if he married away from home, but I managed to find a branch of my family by researching the witnesses.  :)

Do you know if Samuel served in the First World War or which regiment he may have served with?? That seems like your best bet at the moment for finding him, though from what you say it sounds as though you have already searched and searched for that information.

I seem to be in the same boat as you at the moment, I have a rellie's marriage cert, date of death and father's name, but because I don't know where she was born, I can't find her anywhere! Frustrating isn't it!! I wish they could have put "place of birth" on a marriage certificate, it would have been so useful!! :-\  >:(

Best wishes,
millerina  :)
