DEWAR family
« on: Monday 10 October 05 04:39 BST (UK) »
Good day all

I have the following record of the ship the Scottish Knight.  On board were:

Dewar:           Ann              13
                      Bella             12
                      Rebecca        12
                      John              22
                      James            29
                      Robert           32
                      Mary              38
                      Christine        9
                      Jane               7
                      Mary              2

They all traveled to Mackay Australia.

John and James were the brothers of Robert Dewar and son of Robert Dewar and Jean Robertson married in 1840 in Kettle Fife.  Other children were David, Michael, and Isabella (who appeared to have remained in Scotland)

The son Robert's first wife was Christina Brough who died at a young age.  There children were Annie Young Dewar (my great grandmother), Isabella Dewar, Christina Dewar(written as Christine), Jean Robertson Dewar (written as Jane).

Rebecca could have been Robina who was Robert's second wife Mary's child.

I am assuming that Mary was the child of Robert and Mary.

If anyone is researching this family I would love to learn more about the Dewars.  In exchange I could tell you about the family of Annie Young Dewar and Thomas Cairns Aitken and also about her family with her second husband Edward Emmanuel Reynolds.

Have a great day
Sharleen

Hi Sharleen

I'm not researching your family, but my family  came from Kettle, Fife to Sydney in 1836. I have some modern day photos of Kettle, that were taken for me by a current resident. If you would like copies of same please send me a pm.

Hello Sharleen,
I have just spotted your interest in the Dewar family of Mackay.
I am a descendant of Isabella Dewar (Annie Young Dewar's sister).
I live in Western Australia and am travelling around Aust in a caravan and am at the moment in Mackay, Qld - I was just doing some searching around the internet for some cemetery information on the Dewar family when I came across your query.
I would love to exchange information on this family.

Sharleen and SG
I am also an Australian Dewar descendent; however I can't match with any of the names Sharleen has listed even though my Dewars were also from Fife.
My 4th great grandparents were John Dewar c1742-26/12/1814 and Isobel Meiklejohn c1743-4/4/1810.
If either of you relate to them, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi

I am glad to read your post. I am sorry that I have not responded immediately - my life is a bit upside down right now.  I had a fall 8 weeks ago and am still recovering and trying to juggle physio and work.  Ugh.

What I will tell you is that I have a copy of the shipping record showing the family father - children and I think if I remember correctly 2 brothers traveling from Scotland to MacKay.  I have a bit of history of the family in Scotland as well.

Annie married Thomas Cairns Aitken and it seems like he was killed and she later married a guy by the name of Reynolds.  She had 1 son and 2 daughters, one of which is my grandmother.

If you take any photo's of the MacKay area I would love to see them.  I will send you a pm with my email.

John when I look back in my notes I will look for those names.  It is all on my external drive and I am not linked to that right now.

Have a great day
Sharleen

Just thought I would post this in case anyone is interested in life's ups and downs .in about 1920 or 1930 my granfather was personal valet to one of the Dewar family, I do not know which one.Mr Dewar lived in Whitehall Court which is just about as exclusive and expensive as it gets, and my grandfather looked after him there. Now I do not know how many people know this but Mr Dewar used to pronounce his name De wor or Dewaugh the same as the famous writers. I do not drink whisky but if I did it seems that I should ask for a glass of De wors.Mr dewar, would assume lead a privileged lfe, as he was perfectly entitled to.However my grandfathers life was just the opposite. He was born in Tiger Bay, one of 9 children, no telly in those days, .When he was very young his father was killed when he fell down the hold of a ship he was unloading and the family were awarded 1 shilling a week to live on, yes that's right a whole shilling. When he was fourteen he left school and walked to London to find work as he did not want to work in the docks or the mines.I know he had jobs as a waiter and during the first war he served as a cook in the Royal Navy .He was a very good cook but after the war and after working for Mr Dewar he worked as a waiter in Londons West End at one of the top restaurants .At that time famous hollywood actors and American singers flooded into London to work and play and they were generous to a fault, my Grandad made a fortune in tips he was no way going back to 1 shilling a week. The rich could afford it and if they offered it he took it alright , like millions of others he knew hard times As different as he was to Mr De Wor he also had a living to make, he was the nicest, ki ndest man and I loved him dearly, I never knew him to ever lose his temper with anyone. Thanks for taking the time to read this I hope it has given an insight into how the other half live as if we didn't know already.I did not realise Dewars whisky was still going but I gather the Americans love the stuff, and at up to £65 per bottle .it seems ironic to me that both Mr Dewar and my grandad both made a good living out of the americans and I am glad because my father was American and my mother was English, Oh how the World turns, All the best, Richard.
