Many thanks for sharing your information.I haven't been doing much family history for a couple of years (both myself and my husband parents have passed away ) and I seemed to loose enthusiasm without anyone to share the info with,my brothers are not really interested!However my Christmas present this year has been an ancestry subscription and I am looking forward starting again so your post has been very timely.
 My grandmother was Catherine McVeety b 1877. Her father was Henry McVeety and mother Hannah Etchells. Her grandparents were George McVeety and Margaret Balaam.
By 1895 both Catherine's parents had died and she left Liverpool on SS Southwark to travel to America. My father told me she went to stay with an uncle ,however she didn't settle and returned to Manchester by 1899 when she married Charles Bowden. My father was the youngest of their 10 children. I haven't been able to find out if the uncle she went to stay with was from the McVeety side of the family . The address she went to stay at was 2340 Biddle street in the Chester area of Philadelphia.

Glad the info was of some help.  In my records I have 8 children of Catherine & Charles Bowden (William Henry, Maggie, Emily, Elsie, Charles, George, Leslie, Arthur) who am I missing? Not surprisingly being Ireland I have come to a dead end in trying to find any info there as regards our McVeety origin.  Just that my 3x great grand parents were William McVeety (b1792 in Donegal) & Elizabeth (or Isabella) Spencer (b1801 in Ireland).  Do you know the story about Mary Georgina McVeety who emigrated to Australia, married a Scot named Andrew Templeton, a gold prospector & something of an explorer who supposedly discovered 3 rivers in Queensland & named them after her, following her death giving birth to twins?  The rivers - "Mary", "Georgina" & "Templeton".

The 2 missing are Joseph born 1913 died 1915 and my dad Albert born 1920 died 2013.
I hadn't heard the story about Australia.
Unfortunately my grandmother Catherine died before my parents married, dad was abroad serving in the Royal Engineers, however as he was the only one not married Catherine's wedding ring was saved for him so it was used when my parents married and now it is my daughters wedding ring, wonder if the gold came from Australia!

Hi Linda,

Thanks for that.  Mary Georgina McVeety was the daughter of William (b1820 in Carlow, brother of George & Isabella) & his wife Mary Woods.  William & Mary with daughters Mary Georgina & Margaret emigrated to Australia in 1861.  Mary Georgina (b1850 in Manchester) married Andrew Templeton at Rockhampton (Queensland) in 1870 & she died in child birth in 1881 (buried at Charters Towers near Cairns, with headstone).  There is another claim for the naming of at least one of the three rivers (by a local Queensland governor, after his daughter) but for me the three names (not least Templeton) seem too much of a coincidence.  So it`ll do for me!
