1841 Census Kerry -- Arthur WILLIAMS
« on: Saturday 08 October 05 18:06 BST (UK) »
Hello,  :)

Arthur WILLIAMS b 1821 + Mary TROW b 1820 may not yet have married (each other) as early as 1841, as first child wasn't born until 1846.
So, Arthur should still be at home with father Thomas WILLIAMS + Ann (???), perhaps with (possible) siblings George and Thomas.

Can anyone find some verification/validation?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Siani,
I looked at the 1841 census for Kerry and was unable to find Arthur.   I could only find one Thomas Williams who had a wife named Ann...........
HO107/1439/6, Upper Kerry, Enumeration Dist 3, page 5
The address appeared to be Cutsoid Commune but was badly written, faint and partially obscured  ???
All surnames Williams, all born in county apart from Ann
Thomas, 45, Ag Lab
Ann, 45
David, 10
Catharina, 8
Pryce, 6
Sarah, 2............Not much help I'm afraid.

The plot thickens with the 1851 census HO107/2497, folio 58, page1, Kerry Parish.   All surnames Williams, address Goitre Hall (sounds painful)
Arthur, h, m, Ag Lab, MGY Kerry
Mary, w, m, 30, MGY Kerry
George, s, 3, MON Bedwallte (how strange)
Thomas, s, 3 (yes 3), MGY Kerry
Edward, s, 3mths................

Then in 1861, RG9/4249, folio 27, page 1, Kerry
All surnames Williams, address Kerry Village
Arthur, h, m, 37, Labourer, MGY Carno
Mary, w, m, MGY Llandyssil
Edward, s, 10, MGY Kerry
Ann, d, 8, MGY Kerry............seems like more errors

The enumerators don't seem to be consistent or there was more than one family.
I looked in Carno in the 1841 for Arthur and his family but no joy.   The 1881 gives Kerry as Athur's birthplace.

I have Trows in my family but from the Welshpool/Berriew area.   I'm trying to trace Joseph Trow a butcher whose daughter Jane was born about 1836 in Berriew.

Dave,

Thank you SOOO much. The 1851 Census family, Goitre Hall, is the one I am trying to follow earlier.

Yes, the MON birth of Son #1, George, has been bewildering. I thought maybe father went south for work. Free BMD records their marriage in June quarter 1845, Abergavenny, MON. So Mary TROW may have been 'espoused' to Arthur, following him south. Rather how a Nazarene family gave birth in Bethlehem. I think his age s/b about 5 (b abt 1847?), making the 3 for middle son more probable.

Now the 1861 census is interesting: close but no cigar, I am afraid. Arthur's age is off by 3 yrs, both parents have different towns of birth. While it could be possible that a 15-yr old George might be working elsewhere, the 13-yr old Thomas would still be home, I should think. A 10-yr old Arthur is there, and a new sister Ann? Just too many new options to swallow.

That there would be more than one WILLIAMS is not difficult to assume: we ARE talking of WALES, after all. That is why I have failed to make much headway. I try to find a wife's surname and follow that ofttimes, as it almost has to be less common. TROW and WOOSNAM have certainly been that, but not without their own frequency just within this small area.

The 1891 Census records Arthur & Mary as well. I have seen their gravesites in the parish Church, St Michael the Archangel.

I presume you have seen Phil Mustoe's site of TROWs? The one I researched some years ago has been updated & moved, and I'm trying to find the URL for you.

Good luck in your research!

Thanks again

Annwyl Dewi

I have just gotten round to entering my surname interests, and am in the process of doing searches on same.

Turns out in addition to the TROWs, we seem to have WOOSNAM in common.

My ggggrandfather George TROW married a Sarah WOOSNAM of Llandinam in 1803.

Comments?

Hi
Thanks for the url, I had seen Phil Mustoe's site but all his Trows appear to be in the Kerry area of Montgomeryshire whereas mine are from the Welshpool area.   There may however be a connection earlier.
Unfortunately I have not found a Woosnam in my family but I do have lots of Jones from the Carno, Trefeglwys, Llanbrynmair, Llandinam area............who doesn't  :)
Cheers Dave
