Hi Jumbo!

No, the W/O i/c Mess wasn't Ovens (<grin>) but I have a feeling it's something like that - starts with an O or a letter near that.  Anyway, if you ever do remember his name, let me know. As I said, he was so good to my friend, Jan and I, it bothers me I can't remember his name.

Have fun remembering the faces behind the names Frank mentioned!!

Hi SWO man,

I was at Haydock fro mid 61 to Nov 63. I worked in the Gen Off and also with Flt Lt Fleet in the Fam Off. My name was Jim Monkman, a young lad wet behind the ears from the Orkney Isles !. I remember you well and can recall a few of the names you mentioned. I often played snooker with you, and do I recall you being a bit colour blind ?. I also remember your accident, a very tough time you had after being in the RAF for so long.

Would be nice to talk again if you can remember me.

Hi All,

My mum was at Haydock and I recognise her in the description of the girl from Liverpool in accounts who went to OTC! - Lynn McGowan as she was then! She would have arrived in around 1960 I think.
If it is of interest I can ask her for some photos and see if I can scan and post them.

Regards
Julie

Hello Frank and all,

My daughter found this site as she is into family history.

Where do I start?

I was stationed at Haydock from 1960 to 1963  as a Local Service WRAF.  As someone recalled, I used to travel from Walton to RAF Fazackerley and catch the RAF bus with the marrieds.

I was the pay clerk.  When I arrived, Flt Lt Jones was the SAO, Cpl Ken Dodds and Junior Tech Ginger.  Barbara Best and Kathleen Lenahan were the other two Local Service WRAF.  Flt Lt Symondson arrived later.  There was a WO accounts who I remember vividly but can't recall his name.

A lot of the names I recognise and the posts brought back some lovely memories.  There was a lovely Sgt who had recently lost his wife; he used to drive me home sometimes.  Think he worked in comms.

I remember you very well Frank and have a couple of pictures of you from Haydock days.  I have several photos and press cuttings and, if it is OK to post them I will have a go.  If all else fails, I am sure Julie will provide the technical help!  I can remember your accident too.  It was lovely to hear that it had a happy ending with your meeting your wife.

When the Naafi was refurbished, there was a competition to name the new club.  I won the competition with my suggestion of 'The Spiders Web Club' and got the prize of £5.  Big money then.  I was the first person to be (officially) allowed into the new club and have the photo taken on the occasion.

After Ken Dodds (have a photo of him too!) there was Cpl Brian Williams.  He married one of the regular WRAF and some of us went to Withernsea for the wedding.  A couple of years later, I was posted as an A/O to Singapore and there he was!  I heard later that he had told everyone that he had known me as a SACW.  Asked if I was any good, he responded that he had taught me everything that he knew.  With typical RAF humour, the quick as a flash response was, 'Everything you know?  She'll be rubbbish then!'  LOL.

Lynn

Hi Lynn!

Remember me?  We were in Accounting together ('64 till you went to OTC). You lived down by the bridge at Broadway, I lived on Sonning Road and when I went home for the weekend, you and I would drive to Fazakerley in the bus with the men then take the 61 home ... then I'd call for you on Monday morning and we'd reverse the trip back to camp!
When I was in Accounting, we had Cpl Brian Williams (his wife had a baby boy while you were there), Ken Dodds and Flt Lt Symondson as well as the WO, whose name I can't remember either - which is pretty sad considering he and his wife had me over for dinner several times. There was also an SAC (dark, curly haired fellow) in Accounting whose name I can't remember.
How did you get on at OTC? I remember Plt Officer Margaret Eagles giving you her old notebooks to study.
Anyway, would love to hear from you and to know what happened to you after you left Haydock.

Hello Jacqui,

Yes, I do remember you.  Wasn't that bus a real boneshaker?  LOL

I am just going to try to post a photo - back in a moment.
