Underwoods of Wigan, circa 1800-1850
« on: Friday 07 October 05 22:40 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of any members of this family.  I have just discovered some ancestors with this name tonight, and want to know more.  It looks like there were only 2 or 3 families with underwood surname in the area at 1881 census, and church records from Mormon website took me back to William and Jane, and their 2 sons both called John.
Cheers

Hi,

From the 1841 census courtesy of www.lan-opc.org.uk/Wigan/index.html.

Living at Scholes

UNDERWOOD     WILLIAM      35COTTON WEAVER
UNDERWOOD     JANE         35
UNDERWOOD     MARY         15MULE SPINNER MILLS
UNDERWOOD     JOHN         11
UNDERWOOD     ALICE         4

There are plenty more Underwoods listed.  The file takes a few minutes to download and then press CTRL and F on your keyboard, Type in Underwood then press find.  It will take you to all instances of that surname.

Regards,

Mo

Thanks, that was brilliant.  I think I can put the whole family in context now.
