Hi!

Have you found Robert, his wife Charlotte and their children living in Cirencester in the 1881 census?

It's just that Robert's place of birth is given as .....stone and there just happens to be an entry for the christening of a Robert Mawby, the son of William and Mary Mawby, on 22nd July 1838 at Atherstone, near Tamworth, on the International Genealogical Index (www.familysearch.org).

If this is the Robert you are looking for, his birth was registered in the district of Atherstone in the Qtr to Sept 1838 (Vol 16 Page 191).

I have also come across registrations for the birth of some of the children:

Charlotte Mary       Qtr to Dec 1865    Isle of Wight
Frank                   Qtr to Dec 1871    Watford
Rosa                    Qtr to Mar 1876    Cirencester
Ellen                    Qtr to Dec 1878    Cirencester

There was also a record for the registration of the birth of Ada Elizabeth Mawby in the Qtr to Mar 1864 in the Isle of Wight. I think Ada was also one of Robert and Charlotte's children, as there is a record for her marriage (to either Walter John Hayes or Arthur John Tranter) in the district of Cirencester in the Qtr to Dec 1889.

Incidentally, Ada appears in the 1881 Census as Ada Elizabeth Manby, age 17, born at Bonchurch in the Isle of Wight. She was a visitor at the house of Edwin Stevenson in Cheltenham Road, Stratton, Glos.

I hope this helps!

Hi Ju,
Thanks for the reply, yes I think your info is correct,
I have recently managed to get a copy of my G.Grandads
birth certificate, which shows that
his Father was Robert From Atherstone.
Robert it seems fell on difficult times in later life.
I have found the 1891 census list for the Cirensester Union
Workhouse where he is recorded as being married aged 52
and working as an outfitters assistant.
Presumably Charlotte his wife is still alive at this point otherwise he would be recorded as a widower however there is no record of her being with him in the workhouse
or indeed any of his children
A little further investigation may reveal what became of them
Cheers
Ian
