PATTESON 1841 and 1851 census Woodnesborough
« on: Thursday 06 October 05 05:02 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any information about the PATTESON (PATERSON) family(ies) listed in the 1841 and 1851 census returns for Woodnesborough or surrounding areas. I am particularly interested in Theophilus and Ann Patteson, sons William (born 1806) and James (born 1809). Ann was buried at Woodnesborough in 1846 and James moved to London, Poplar.

Hello Sue

Many thanks for the prompt reply. You have found the right Ann and the info tells me that her husband pre-deceased here. The Theophilos (us) may be a son, but if so I'm missing quite a few siblings. It is also interesting for me to see that the family had finally adopted the Patterson spelling as used by later generations.

The other shoe-making Pattersons are a mystery at this stage. Thanks for the extra leads.
best regards
John

Hi John,
I've had a trawl through the 1851 census for Woodnesboro, but couldn't spot any of your Patterson family. If you think they may be in another parish, then please post details, and we'll have another search for you.

Hello Carol

The fact that no Pattersons were still living in Woodnesborough in 1851 is useful information. I have learned that Theophilus and Ann Patteson died in the 1840s and their son James had moved to Poplar by 1849. However, they had another son William who I had thought was still living in the area. It may be that he is the "William Pattison" who is buried in Woodnesborough (1858), but was living in Upper Walmer.  There is another Theophilus Patterson (aged 20) living with Ann in 1841, but he seems to have vanished from the records.

all the best and thanks
John

Hi,
I've had a look through St Peters parish in the 1841 census, couldn't spot William or Sarah, but this entry may be relevant.
ref HO107 468-19 folio 561 page 3: Belmont House, St Peters (near to Calais Court)
James Patteson age 32 M S (male servant) born in county
employed in the house of John and Georgiana Thompson

I've no idea where else to look for William and Sarah, as servants they could be employed anywhere.
