1871/61 Lookup please - William Gabb

Hi,

My Gt Grandfather William Gabb gives his place of birth as 'Worcesshr Droitwich' in the 1901, and age 50.

In 1891 he cannot be found, and his wife is living with her 2 children in Nottingham. She gives her realtionship to the Head as Wife and is Married. Family legend has it that he was a bad 'un, and drank & gamboled himself into  debt, eventually prison, hence his abscence.

In 1881 William was a police constable in Mansfield, aged 29, and his place of birth is given as Gloucestershire.

In 1873, when he married, he gives his fathers name as John Gabb, occupation Omnibus Driver.

Can anyone trace him in Worcester/Droitwich or thereabouts in the 1871 & 1861 census, as I can't pin him down in Gloucestershire satisfactorily.

this could be him in 1891 and as you said his misses was in this county looks likely it is him
staying at h.m.prison,nottingham north east st mary in 1891-

That confirms much of what I already know, but actual evidence of William in prison is fantastic.

John Gabb wifes maiden name was Purnell, which explains Rebecca.

I am in touch with descendants of this John Gabb, but was doubting the connection.

The more I discover, the more it looks as if I am also descended from Mr. J Gabb.
