Murderer and Victim named on Tombstone

This Stone
Sacred to the memory of
Joseph Swain, Fisherman
was created at the expense of
the members of the friendly
Society of Hastings
in commiseration of his cruel and
untimely death and as a record of the
public indignation at the needless and
sanguinary violence of which he was the
unoffending Victim.  He ws shot by George
England, one of the Sailors employed in
the Coast Blockade service in open day
on the 13th March 1821 and almost
instantly expired in the 29th year
of his age, leaving a Widow and five
small children to lament his loss.

NB - George England, who had attempted to search Swains boat, was found guilty of murder but was later pardoned - to the fury of the Hastings Fishermen

On a lighter note -

Here lies my wife: here let her lie!
Now she's at rest, and so am I.

   J. Dryden, intended epitaph for his wife ;D

Change of mood -

To save your world you asked this man to die:
Would this man, could he see you now, ask why?

Epitaph for an unknown soldier. :(

When I was 13 I went on a school trip to Blaenavon, an old mining village near Pontypool in Wales. For some reason which I cannot recall, we had to walk through a cemetery, part of which had fallen into terrible disrepair, and was home to the graves of mostly cholera victims and poor miners. One large monument which was relatively intact due to it's close proximity to the church had a statue of either children, or child-like angels. I can't quite recall whiuch. Basically, the inscription on the monument read something like "all children who stand before this tomb shall drop dead". It was slightly more colurful than that, but I and all my friends were very freaked-out by a monument guaranteeing our swift death. Why did people create such horrifying messages on graves?
