What a lovely stone Fitty - it has weathered beautifully.

The Grace Darling memorial is very impressive - I remember learning about her at school and thought she was wonderfully brave!

The museum at Bamburgh has just been awared a lottery grant, about time too.  They have some wonderful artifacts , including the actual boat Grace rescued the sailors in.  It's all cramped in what looks like a an old garage now.  The grant will make so much difference to them.

We're planning to spend a week up there next year ( heaven help them) and rent a cottage between 8 of us.  I might even get to "do" a few more graveyards too!

I have been through all these page's the photo's are beautiful. It has been mentioned that a very old stone was seen peeking out of the ground very well preserved. The reason it looked like new is  over Time the grave stones fall. Grass grows over it so it protect's it from the elements. A couple of years ago i went over to a part of a cemetery in a very large corner. Looked like a lawn with one very old and lonley headstone. So making sure no one was looking i went over the ground prodding the earth with my pen. It kept hitting a hard stone. so quick look round i removed some grass and soil and  I too found what looked to be a very large Head Stone. It was Black marble the inscription was in gold just like the day it was made in the late 1700. Wish i had x-ray eyes. ;D I dont know if anyone does this but if i ever want to take a photo of a grave stone and the inscription isnt very clear. I go over it with chalk.

Hi, Graceland/Jan and all

Just disposed of the moderators hat for a few minutes in order to reply as a rootschat member, I think the pictures are great but I am sure they would not cause a problem if the info from the graves stone was presented as well as the photos, in fact I am sure the thread could become one of the most read. If the MI's were present I am sure there could be no arguments.

Good Idia Peter  :D I did the opposite, took the inscriptions but didnt take any photo's. I will next time round, but i will try and make the photo's smaller  this will leave space for the inscription  and will take less time to download. I am going to wait and see if there is any interest in my topic first.
