1871 Ilkley, Yorks SMITH
« on: Tuesday 17 August 04 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I would very much like a look up of the 1871 census of Ilkley if possible please for the following.

Thomas Smith aged 34 born Carlton, Skipton, Yorks
Elizabeth Smith born Addingham aged 31
Their children were John Smith aged 5 & Edie Smith aged 11 months both born in Ilkley.

I have the above information from the census but the source (Whafedale web site) did not give the reference no. or Thomas Smith's occupation.

I am almost sure that the above is the John Smith I am looking for. My John Smith was supposedly born in Addingham but I'm beginning to think he was actually born in Ilkley then moved to Addingham. His father was Thomas Smith a mason. I am hoping that the above Thomas was also a mason in the 1871 Ilkley census which would mean I was on the right track.

Regards

criggy

Hi Criggy

They dont seem to be there. I looked through Ilkley twice with no result. Then I thought maybe the site got the location wrong, that maybe they were on the same 1871 census piece as Ilkley but no luck. Perhaps contacting the site somehow for the info?

All the best
Linda

Hi Linda

Many, many thanks for looking (twice). I do appreciate your help enormously.

Didn't think there would be any problems with this one, sorry, especially as the reference quoted 1871 Ilkley. I always seem to be taking one step forward and two steps back as far as the Smiths are concerned!

Will go back and query the references as you suggest.

Thanks again

criggy

Hi Sandie

It was really very kind of you to check up for me (and Smiths too!). I'm very grateful.

Very strange though that they don't appear anywhere. Will definitately have to go back to that original reference.

Thanks again for trying.

Cheers

I have just noticed your post about Smith, I have the 1871 on cd & the reference number for the family is:
Ilkley piece number 4303 folio 11.
The cd does not give occupation i'm afraid but Edie is down as Edith on my disc, maybe someone with the census will be able to find it know

Hi Sandra, Hi Linda

Excellent work, thanks very much! I'm very grateful to both of you.

Thomas WAS a mason after all. Nice to confirm I'm on the right track.

Thanks also for the 1851 Addington info - could be useful. Will have to go away now & do some checking..

Once again many, many thanks.

Regards
