Ballyguin/Turlough/Castlebar/Mohina?
« on: Tuesday 04 October 05 01:18 BST (UK) »
I am researching Isaac Beckett for a family member.  He came from Mayo and settled in New Zealand.  I have some names that list Turlough, Castlebar as a birth place but on a map I looked at it appears that Turlough and Castlebar are two separate towns.  Some of the names also have Ballyguin associated with them - is this an area within Turlough or Castlebar?  There is also a mention of Mohina/Mohena but I haven't been able to find it.  Any comments or info appreciated.

Hi-
Turlough is just up the road from Castlebar.  You make have looked at the 1901 census - Leitrim-Roscommon site - there is an Isaac Beckett aged 36 yrs living Mill Street, Ballina. There are also entries for Ballyguin (Turlough) and Moyhenna. Hope this is of use

I have been building a family tree that includes the Beckett's of Mayo.

I have a record of Isaac who was born about 1852 and was one of 12 children incl my great grandmother . My records suggest he went to N.Z and was married to Clara Wheeler and had 6 children.

He was born at Ballyguin which is a very small area within a townland of Turlough in Co. Mayo.

If this links; I'm happy to share - and find out more detail re the NZ family.

I have a record of his childrens names - that's probably our best link

Surfing net and found this message.  Really hope I can contact jnws.  Can you let me have information regarding the Beckett family from ballyguin?  I have an Isaac Beckett born in 1864 and suspect that his father Archibald is one of the  12 children mentioned which included your G.Grandmother.  My Isaac is the one listed in Ballina in 1901 census age 36.  His sister Anne Jane was married to my G.Grandfather James Acton.  Would be thrilled to be able to get back another generation.  As far as I know my Becketts remained in Ballina.
Fingers crossed!

Hi Maz

Welcome to Rootschat -

You might like to have a look at this site -

http://mayo.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes

The Irish Family History Foundation are putting many of the parish records on line.
It's free to register and search but costs five euros to view each record.

If you're looking for a birth/baptism you can also put the father's name in so  it narrows the search a bit. Unfortunately it doesn't give the parish so it's sometimes a matter of trying each parish from the list.

There are a few birth/baptism entries for Isaac Beckett but only one with a father Archibald  (in 1864) - parish is Westport District? .
Hopefully the record might give the mother's name.
You can try different children with the father's name as Archibald.

There's a baptism of an Archibald Beckett in 1822 (Thurlough Church of Ireland) and a couple of later burials.

One of the drawbacks of this site is that you could potentially waste money if it's the wrong record as there isn't a lot of additional information to help you choose the right record  - especially if you have more popular names to look for - like mine!!

I think the site suggests putting 40 euros on the account but you can put less.

The link is for County Mayo but if you want to try other counties - click on 'map.'

Here's a link for Griffiths Valuation of Ireland - just select Mayo and search for Beckett - there' are a few entries .

You might already have this link -

Hope this is useful.

Good Luck
