Franklin/Eadon families
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 21:58 BST (UK) »
I have traced the death of William Henry Franklin of 12, Upper St. Martin's Lane in 1849. He was a bootmaker and died in the King's College Hospital, St Clement Dane of "Trissmuss" (Lock Jaw to us). He was born in 1811 although where is not known at this moment.

It was said that after his death, the eldest child John who was 14 ran away, took the King's Shilling and joined the army as a foot soldier. The family found him, tried to buy him out, but had to settle for buying him commission, the last time that could be done. By now it was 1854 and he went off to the Crimea to loose his life in the Charge of the Light Brigade (or so the family story tells).

William Henry junior married Jane Eadon, a greengrocer's daughter of Regent Street in 1865 and three months later was required by the family to chase Esther, his younger sister, all the way to Melbourne, Australia as she had eloped with an "undesirable" called Marson. This is where my grandmother, Jane Annie Franklin was born on 11th. October 1866.  They came back with her to London, but without Esther whom they could not find.

I have found most of the rest of the Thomas Eadon's family, except that in Witney, Oxford, from where he left as a young lad.

The whereabouts of my father's cousins are mostly in Kent I think.  Where are they?

Has anyone any more info about the earlier origins of this Franklin family please?

Dear Bryant,

A reply at last to my request for info! Thank you.

Yes, you have the right information, but Wm. Henry Snr's first son was propbably born just prior to July 1837 as I think his birth would have been traced more easily.

Wm. Hry. Franklin married Ann Corbett (b. 25 Jun 1812). Their children were:

1. John, who was around 14 years old in 1849 when his father died and he ran away from home.
2. Emma, (b. 1838)
3. Eliza, (b. 1843)
4. William Henry, (b. 24 Jan 1846)
5. Esther Ellen, (b. 1849)

William Henry's death certificate states that he was a bootmaker of 12 Upper St. Martin's Lane. I have not found an entry yet in the 1841 census.
The 1851 census records Ann Franklin, a widow, living on parish relief, living in Hart Street with all the children except John.
The 1861 census records Ann Franklin in business in Hart Street as an upholsteress with her growing family and a "fancy worker" employee.
The 1871 census records Ann still living in Hart St., while Wm.Hry. Jnr is living on the Strand with his son, William Henry John Franklin (b. 1870).
The 1881 Census records Wm. Hry. living at 44 Marlee Terrace, Lambeth with his family and a servant. His daughter, Jane Annie (my grandmother) was 14 years old.

Ann Franklin died 12 April 1890 in Red Lion Square, Soho.

William Hnry Jnr. married Jane Eadon (b. 25 Jan 1846 at 36 Regent Street). They were marrried 1 June 1865 in St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden.

Jane's father was indeed Thomas Eadon (b. 1809 in Cogges, Witney, Oxfordshire), a greengrocer, apprenticed as a baker to Joseph Williams (his future father-in-law) of 1 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth before his marriage to Elizabeth (b. 23 Aug 1817 in Chatham, Kent).

The old couple retired to 2, Cumberland Villas, Battersea where they both died.

Jane was the fourth child of 10.

1.  John (b. 1840)
2.  Elizabeth (b. 1842)
3.  Thomas (b. 1842)
4.  Jane (b. 1846)
5.  Annie (b. 1850)
6.  Eliza  (b. 1852)
7.  George (b. 1854)
8.  Charles (b. 1857)
9.  Alice  (b. 1858)
10. Charlotte (b. 1861)

Is this enough info for you at the moment?  Please keep in touch.

Bob.

The east end was a hive of manufacturing for all things worn.....so whether a cobbler or seamstress the east end could well house your family at this period in time...and it wasn't unusual to move west into the more affluent areas once a few bob was acquired......

Bob

I gather that you have the birth cert of William Henry born 24th Jan 1846 and that's how you know the father and mother of William.............is that correct?

If so............their is no reason why William couldn't have been married before .... his wife having died and leading to him remarrying Mary Ann Corbett? is her surname definitely Corbett?

Now..........William's & Henry's are common but a few possibilities for a 2nd/3rd marriage?

1839...Sept qtr....St Saviours...vol 4...page 462....WILLIAM HENRY FRANKLYN

1844...Sept qtr...St Geo East...vol 2...page 68....WILLIAM HENRY FRANKLIN

1846...Dec qtr...Hackney...vol 3...page 138....WILLIAM HENRY FRANKLIN

*the death cert of William in 1849........was it his wife Mary Ann ...Mary/Ann that registered/was present at his death?
