I should have noted in my previous post that there are some scanty documents and references for Angus McDonald and family in the years after arriving in Upper Canada. Of course, once census are being collected there is a clearer trail. They can also be found in local histories, etc. Angus McDonald, however, died within a year of arriving, therefore tracking place of origin has been problematic as other than a few minor references, there is little to go on.

I have searched ScotlandsPeople, FindMyPast, MyHeritage, Ancestry, etc.,
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

According to the Detailed List of the Old Parochial Registers https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/list-of-oprs/detailed-list-of-old-parochial-registers-of-scotland.pdf there are no surviving  records before 1800 from any of the Inverness-shire island parishes.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Forfarian, thanks for that. I found that same reference a few days ago, so that confirms what I thought I found...or didn't find. Much of what I've found so far was pieced together initially through local histories on the Canadian side, the Selkirk Papers, and confirmed by Upper Canada land records, land surveys, maps, and census when they began decades later.
I've scanned though, not quite every page, Selkirk's and his managers' various letters, journals, etc. for information. Found quite a bit of relevant history, but only three references as to possible origins for the Angus McDonald and family. Better than nothing I suppose. I'm waiting on some documents from Library and Archives Canada, but they will likely only confirm what I already have. Many historians have tracked over the same terrain so I may just be repeating their work. It might be too much to hope for a record of Selkirk's recruiters detailing where they went when recruiting for these settlers. I'll start a post on this as it might elicit some resources I haven't found or considered yet.

Wish I could have brought better news.

Hi Adam,
I have checked through all my records and unfortunately I don't have anything on your Angus McDonald and family.

The parish registers are not available for the time period.  Sleat registers start in 1813, which is a big brick wall to researching prior to that.

The only way I have been able to go further back is by getting death certificates of people born before 1813 and who died after the start of civil registration in 1855.  This at least provides parents names from the death certificate.  Not much... but better than nothing.

But your family is in Canada by that point!

Have you contacted the Sleat local history society?  They may have some tips.

The only other idea I have is investigating the DNA matches who have McDonalds on Skye to see if you can put together any family relationships that way?  A long shot, but sometimes sideways research pays off.

Debbie,
Thanks for checking. I have several feelers out with people on GED Match and have joined a few of their ancestor projects. We’ll see what comes of that. I will have to make a concerted effort to better understand DNA and the various methods of refining results.
I haven’t yet contacted the Sleat history society but have checked out their website. Will do that next.
