Forfarian, thanks for that. I found that same reference a few days ago, so that confirms what I thought I found...or didn't find. Much of what I've found so far was pieced together initially through local histories on the Canadian side, the Selkirk Papers, and confirmed by Upper Canada land records, land surveys, maps, and census when they began decades later.
I've scanned though, not quite every page, Selkirk's and his managers' various letters, journals, etc. for information. Found quite a bit of relevant history, but only three references as to possible origins for the Angus McDonald and family. Better than nothing I suppose. I'm waiting on some documents from Library and Archives Canada, but they will likely only confirm what I already have. Many historians have tracked over the same terrain so I may just be repeating their work. It might be too much to hope for a record of Selkirk's recruiters detailing where they went when recruiting for these settlers. I'll start a post on this as it might elicit some resources I haven't found or considered yet.
