Hi Again
I have done the things you suggested and now need someone who knows the history of the building.

On the census my ancestors spirit merchant shop is shown as being near the Presbyterian church and the Village Tavern is opposite.
From what I have seen the land often changed name according to who owned it.I'm wondering was this part of town once know as McLaughlin land?

On the 1881 census it's Main St --Mclaughlins Land 4 houses the spirit shop and the Presbyterian
church.

1891 Main St -McLaughlins Land 5 houses my ancestor has retired and Alexander Filshie is listed as Spirit Merchant.

I just need to be 100% sure I have the right area.

...good news you are in the right area. The Presbyterian church was one of the first built ....it  was rebuilt in 1822, and  later named  Duntocher West United Free Church  in 1977.    It is straight across from Village Tavern, which was then the West end  pub.       Way back then along the main street,  there was a butchers, cobblers, drapers, newsagents,  2 public houses  and 3 wine and spirit merchants.  I would think you are on the right road.   
The Filshie brother's owned a few pubs,  I'm sure the Milton lnn Dumbarton is owned by one of the Filshies (01389761401)  they maybe able to help.    Myyran x

Someone had mentioned the West End Bar before and the name change explains why I couldn't find it.
I wonder when the present building was built ?

.....l would say around 1800s.  Back then   Duntocher  came under Kilpatrick, then  old Kilpatrick councils.  If your ancestors spirit shop stood  on the corner of the two storey building  the address would come under Old Street.... not Main Street. The two storey houses on Brenner's Land leading up to Filshies West End bar  were still there in the Fifties.  Replaced by modern cottages in the Sixties. Hi Moren,  more good news....after much trawling around website's I have found a photo of the West end in1910  it shows the church opposite and what could be your ancestors house beside it.  I'm trying to get in touch with the web site  society to  allow me to post it to you.   Also found out Alexander Filshie owned Auchentoshan distillery  which still exists in Duntocher.  He bought it in 1834 and sold it 1898.  The pub opened in 1898. Its been the focal point of the village for 117 years. What I'm still trying to find out is when Alexander took over as pub owner...that might give a date when your folks had it.   I'll keep trying.   Myyran
