I'm trying to track down information on John Stewart.

According to his death certificate, he was born in Duntocher in 1817.  However, the 1851 Canada West census has him being born in 1821.  He died in June 1873 in Lanark County, Ontario.

His wife was Agnes Currie, born in 1821 in Lanark County, Canada West.  Agnes' father was a Daniel Currie and her mother was Jane Stewart.  Both of whom died in Lanark County, Ontario.

That's all I've got, which isn't much.

Thanks.
This John Stewart is in my family tree. My mother is a Currie by birth and is decended down through Agnes's brother Daniel. I just happened to be looking for information on another John Stewart and came across this John by googling. I love that a whole new chapter of research has opened up for me. If any one has any more information on the Stewart family please email me! chavez0605yahoocom

I am researching my family tree in Donegal and am related to your McColgans.  Ellen's father James McColgan remarried after his first wife died to Mary McCallion and I am decended from that family.  Your paternal Grandmother would have been approx 4 years old when her mother died.  She had 2 brothers - Peter & William.  I'm not sure but William may have died aged 13 years.  Still looking into this.  I have information on the rest of the family if you wish to get in touch.

do you know anything about Ellen's brother Peter?

Regards
Marie

Hello Marie,
I appreciate you getting in touch. The information you have given is new to me. I reallized, from Ellen's marriage certificate, that her mother was dead but could find no further details. I would really appreciate you letting me have any further details and, of course, I would happily share mine.
Regards
Allister

I will have a look at the info over the next few days and get back to you with what I have.
Delighted to have found you.  I only recently found out about James McColgan's first family and then quite by chance found yourself.

Regards
Marie

As promised see info below on James McColgan & families.

James McColgan Born 1826
MaryAnn McNelis Born 1831

Married approx 1863

Children:
William Born 17 April 1864
Ellen Born 8 May 1866
Peter Born 26 Jan 1868

MaryAnn died 9 April 1870 aged 39 years old.

James remarried on 25 May 1871 to Mary McCallion. On their marriage certificate it states his father was Denis McColgan.  Mary's father was John McCallion.  They had 7 children:

John Born 11 Aug 1872
Daniel Born 27 Sept 1873
Michael Born 6 Jan 1875
Jane Born 13 Mar 1876
Sally Ann Born 26 Dec 1877
William Born 12 Feb 1880
Mary Born 7 Apr 1882

All the above married and all had families except William & Sally.  I am a decendent of John Born 1872.

As I mentioned in my previous note the first William may have died aged 13 years old.  The second William's birth was registered by Ellen McColgan which may have been your paternal grandmother.  I do not have any info as yet on Peter (Born 1868).

I have additional info on the families and their decendents if you want further info.  Also, do you know wherer the Hugh Smith that Ellen married was from?

Marie, Thank you very much for your information. It requires, as is often the case in Fam. Hist.,  that I look again as the track I have been going down diverges from yours!
If it works, I will try to add an attachment to this message with photocopies from the church records which I have related to the following information.

I have Mary Ann baptised in St Columba's Church, Parish of Templemore, Derry on the 13th of February 1844. The father is registered as Thomas Nellis and the mother Catherine Logue, Sponsors - John Nellis and Mary Hines. Also in the same record is this MaryAnn's brothers John (1847) and Thomas (1849). In the same record I have the marriage of Thomas Nellis and Catherine Logue - 11th June 1841 Sponsors - John Flynn and M Nellis.
As to your query about Hugh, I have drawn a blank. I wondered whether just Ellen came across to Scotland by herself to marry him, in which case he could have been born in Scotland and, perhaps had met her on a visit to Ireland.
