Duntocher families

Hi Leagle1

I have a ton of Gallacher's in my family files - linked to the Coyles, Mochans, Morrows and Stewarts.

I very well may have info on your Gallacher lot in there, do you have any info on who your Grandparents or great grandparents were? 

I think all the Gallacher's came from Ireland originally, and most probably from Donegal.  There were an awful lot of Donegal families that settled in and around Duntocher.

Let me know your info, and I will check my files for you.

You are quite right - all roads lead back to Donegal (and what a challenge that particular place is!).
My father was Peter Gallagher (b. 1923 Duntocher)
My grandparents were Charles Gallagher (b. 1895 Duntocher) and Agnes McLean (b. 1901 Duntocher).
My G grandparents were Peter Gallagher (c. 1857 Toame, Donegal) and Elenora (Ellen) Quigley (c. 1867 Donegal).
My GG grandparents were Hugh Gallagher (c. 1830 Toame, Donegal) and Eleanor McGee (c. 1835 unknown Ireland).
I have lots of other detailed info that I can give you if necessary. Charles and Peter were both Cobblers or Shoemakers by trade and the trade was passed on from father to son. Peter was, by all reports an alcoholic and womaniser!! My grandmother Agnes eventually took over the Cobblers shop previously run by my grandfather when the business started to fail and she ran a general dairy/lolly shop for many years which was continued after her death. The shop is still there on Dumbarton Road opposite the soccer grounds and is still in the family but currently leased out and operated as a Florist.
Hope some of this helps - would be great to see if there are any possible connections. My family also has connections with the Cairney family who have a considerable presence in the Duntocher/Hardgate areas.

Good morning Leagle1,

Well, I have scoured my files.  Those Gallachers are such a deceiving lot!!  You look at the names, and think - oh yes, I know that family...  Then you check the files, and it's oops... not them!
I have come to the conclusion, that every male was either a Peter, or a Patrick, and every female was either Agnes or Ellen.  LOL!   

I don't have any extra info on your branch of the family, but I certainly know who your Granny was.  I was brought up on stories from my own Mum about Aggie Gallagher that ran the sweetie shop. 

I may have met a couple of your cousins a few years ago in Duntocher??  My hubby and I were making a video around Auchentoshan Ave., and two fellows at the corner of Auchentoshan and Dalgleish avenue introduced themselves as descendants of your Granny.

It's probably a very safe bet that all the Gallachers in and around Duntocher were related in some way or another, proving the connections is tough when we have to rely on the Donegal records. 
Like you say - a challenge!

Anyway, welcome to Rootschat Cousin!  If we can't find the connection straight away, it will probably come to light with further research.

Many thanks for that. I agree with your sentiments exactly - the damn Gallaghers do not give up their secrets particularly easily!! I laughed at your comments about the lack of choice when it came to names - rest assured that my wife and I have broken that particular mould.
You are not the first to comment on my Grandmother and the "sweetie shop" - many others have mentioned her too - I think she was something of a legend in Duntocher (the power of the sweetie huh?).
My Grandparents lived on Auchentoshan Avenue and that was where they were when my late father and his siblings were born. The folk you mentioned from Dalgleish Ave were probably the Cairneys as several of then either lived or still live there (I visited them when last there in 2005).
Let's keep in touch and share news if anything crops up - I am more than happy to share/help in any way I can. The potential connections are amazing are they not?

Yes, the "power of the Sweetie" certainly did give your Granny a legendary status among the weins of Duntocher.   

We were last over in 2003, the year before my Mum passed away.  My Granny, and Great Granny's family all stayed on Auchentoshan Avenue as well - they lived at #22.

Absolutely keep in touch!  And always post your stories and new finds on the forum, you never know what memories it will twig in another researcher, or where your next cousin might be found.

It is possible that if you are a Coyle from Duntocher we could be connected.

 Leagleeagle and I are 'kissing cousins' - not sure of our exact relationship. 

I live in England, but lived in Duntocher when I was a child.  There was an Isa Coyle who lived in Carleith Ave and she moved to America C 1950/60. I remember Isa had a wonderful voice and sang at local concerts.  I cannot judge her age but she would be in her 70's and is still alive.  Are you any relation to Isa?

Yes, my Coyles are all from Duntocher.  I'm not related to Isa though - I don't think!

My grandparents were Charles Coyle & Maggie Stewart.  They both died in the 1950's, their children were all Duntocher folk as well - Gretta, Catherine, Annie & Tony.
They lived up on Dalgleish Avenue.

My great grandparents were Anthony Coyle and Annie Coyle (yes a Coyle married a Coyle)
Annie came from a big Duntocher family - the daughter of Bernard Coyle and Catherine McGranaghan.
Of course, the lot of them were originaly from Donegal.

Wow!  Nice lot of Cassidy's and other Duntocher names there! 

My Mother's great friend at St. Mary's school in the 1930's was Annie Cassidy - they used to tease each other by finding worms and chasing one another. 
Much better than video games - don't you agree?  LOL!
