An Artisans home was a lodging house for just male workers (as far as I know) --- unless in this particular case it was the actual 'name' of the property.

Hi Matty,

I have had to look this up before -- someone was in an Artisans House in Burnley in 1901 (if my memory serves me correctly --- which it doesn't always!!)

There was an article I found by Googling it -- but it didn't come up this time -- otherwise I could have given you the link.

It wasn't a 'Workhouse'  --- I strongly suspect it was a lodging house for single men who worked (at anything -- as long as they were employed). Maybe there were also similar establishments where single women lodged.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi Pennines,

I am sure that you are right, I have checked all the Electoral Registers that I have for John Thomas McNutt from 1918 with a few missing up to 1933.  On all of them there are a lot of men at the same address Artisans Homes Butts Barnoldswick West Yorkshire.

Also I have found a Baptism Roger son of John Thomas &  Frances McNutt in 1903, no maiden name for Frances and as yet I have not found a marriage or death of Frances or John Thomas.

Thank you for your interest.. the search still goes on even after 10 years since I first posted about John Thomas McNutt lol   :)

Matty --- There are 2 birth registrations for a Roger McNutt Bateson -- first Q/E Jun 1903 -- second one Q/E Dec 1904. (First one died in 1903)

According to Lancs BMD these births were in the sub registration District of Darwen --- mother's maiden name -- Bateson.

If you look you will probably be able to find Roger Bateson, born about 1904 -- with his mother Fanny on the 1911 census --- (we are not allowed to give details from this census!)

In 1901 a Fanny F Bateson aged 32, born Everton -- is living in Ellison Fold, Darwen, shown as a Widow.

It would be useful to obtain Roger McNutt Bateson's birth certificate maybe -- it may just give an address which could be checked to see if John was there.

regards
June
