RUTHERFORD in Kington 1830

Thanks to kmo I discovered a John RUTHERFORD listed as a Surveyor of roads &c in Kington in the 1830's Pigot's.

I have a feeling this may be my G-G-G-Grandfather. Can anybody please help me by giving me some tips about how I can find out a bit more about this gentleman?

I assume that because he was a professional person there would be some records relating to him somewhere. Interestingly enough, I believe the address of his business (36 Bridge Street) is still a professional premises to this day - a solicitor's office.

Could any kind Kingtonian locals shed any light on this for me, please?

I don't know anything about John Rutherford. But, if you go to this website it will tell you what records are held for Kington at the Hereford Records office . You just need to type in Kington and choose Hereford records office.

Have you tried Kington History Society c/o The Library Bridge Street Kington Herefordshire HR5 3DP ?  They hold an enormous amount of details on all indiviuals in the area that appear in any printed form.

Try to Kington Register Office at the Old COurt House, MArket Hall Street Kington  +44

• 1544230156 to see if they hold any certiciates for him, and the 1841 census for Herefordshire perhaps ?

I will try the sources you have suggested - it's really just a matter of getting around to it!

I guess the RUTHERFORD's have remained a mystery for the last 150+ years, so a few more weeks won't hurt.

In Richard Parry's History of Kington written in 1842, he mentions John Rutherford in a chapter entitled Turnpikes and Toll houses:
"...in 1819.... a new Act was passed under which authority the trustees at length consulted Mr MacAdam who recommended Mr John Rutherford one of his assistants, in the year 1822, to be appointed the surveyor of the Kington district - who, after pursuing the same method as Mr MacAdam used in other parts of the kingdom, succeeded in placing the roads through the parish in a good state of repair. The roads are now constructed with the trap or igneous rock from Stanner...."
So an assistant to a famous man !
Kington History Society have a huge database so will surely have more details on him.
