Another question about the talk about the archives.  I was listening honestly.

I remember all about the multiple marriages at The Cathedral but was that the same for Baptisms and did the parents pay a fee for these too?

Thanks

Hi Wheeldon

He did not talk about multiple baptisms and did not mention if a fee was charged. I'm sure I would have remembered a font overflowing with babies!

what a great sounding day we must have one in the south of the country maybe in the Garden of England only problem is we have wine bars down here. A good place to hold it would be Bluewater retail park loads of bars restaurants and for those who like shopping a paradise  near transport links and motorways what a great location

If you read "The Manchester Man" , Joshua Brookes is described as holding Christenings in batches as well...if he didnt like the name you'd chosen for your baby he'd give it a name he thought suitable ..ie what he considerd to be a proper  Christian name.and before you could say anything he'd already done it & moved on to the next. In more recent times an aunt wanted some cousins Christened but the vicar said those names weren't Christian names  & to go and choose some proper ones.....
Certainly from  some research ive just done in parish records seems that folk travelled miles ; the ones i was looking at must have had to walk about3to 5 miles with a baby....and they weren't the only ones baptised on that day.I did wonder why so many folk from all round the district of the Church were apparently baptised on the same day.It seems to have been common practice.

Hi Jed

Thats really interesting. Does it mention whether there is a charge for a baptism?

My ancestors were poor but had so many children I cannot imagine that they could have paid each time. I know one of my families had about 4 or 5 of the children all baptised on one day. Fortunately the Vicar had written their dates of birth at the side.

It was good to meet you on Saturday

Wel, it doesnt give details but describes the melee when the women were waiting to be "churched ".  "The width of the altar would hardly acommodate the number of women waiting to be churched;and the impatient Joshua asssited...to acompany them to their places "Yo kneel there" You come here! That womans not paid"..."Then she describes the christenings.....more mayhem.
In the back, the author Mrs gaskell describes where she got the info from about the characters.& incidents...she just altered names and places a bit...also gives a good description of the cathedral.
In the previous paragraph just noticed "..all ceremonies of this kind were performed in shoals, not singly"..rich & poor together...
Im sure that the archivist  Mr  Hunwick wwould be able to tell you how much it cost.maybe your folk waited till they could afford it.....
Nice to meet you too.
Jed
