« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 19:36 BST (UK) »
I am doing this for my friend Vanessa - these were her great grandparents. They have children George, Charles, Edward, William, Alfred, Emily Maude b. 1869 and Eleanor Jane b. 1867. George Ingle married to Eleanor Spencer in 1858 in Bombay. Eleanor Spencer was born on 18th July 1831. George 's father was Henry Ingle. Please can anyone look for them in India??

What was George Ingle's occupation and his father's occupation? (sounds like your friend has an overseas marriage certificate for them, is this right? If not, see www.gro.gov.uk)  I ask because there tend to be different sets of records depending if they were in the military or not (eg. regimental birth/death indexes, service records, pension records for military folks, consular records for nonmilitary folks, other things for those in governmental posts, etc)

The 1901 census of     Streatham has:

George Ingle, 78, b. India, Retired... Officer And Civil Servant
Eleanor, 69, b. India
Eleanor, 32, b. India
Emily, 30, b. India

There is a possiblity for the son George in Norfolk,     Wells Next The Sea: George Ingle, 41, b. India Sind, Clergyman.

The Times, Wednesday, Aug 30, 1893; pg. 7; Issue 34043; col F  mentions George Ingle, a retired Indian civil servent, who filed for bankruptcy.

Quote
It appears that from 1843 to 1863 the bankrupt was a purser in the Indian Navy, and that from May, 1863 to March, 1882 he was an unconvenanted Indian Civil Servant.  He retired at the latter date, and has since been in receipt of pensions amounting to £420 per annum. The unsecured debts appear to relate entirely to liabilities on shares incurred by the bankrupt as co-trustee of his late father's estate

(There is also a Thomas Ingle, solicitor, listed, also bankrupt due to liabilities as executor/co-trustee of his father's estate, probably brother of George - he's listed on 1901 I think as aged 50, b. India.)

The Times, Saturday, Feb 16, 1895; pg. 16; Issue 34502; col D
- confirms that G. Ingle is the brother of the debtor 'in the preceeding case'

The Times, Saturday, Feb 16, 1895; pg. 16; Issue 34502; col D
- more information on Thomas Ingle (the 'preceeding case') - son of Henry, brother of George.  His father died July, 1884, and as solicitor to the estate he had reinvested some of the assets in Australian and other colonial securities, which due to the depression in Australia and NZ, had wound up being virtually worthless.

The Times, Saturday, Mar 23, 1895; pg. 13; Issue 34532; col D
- George Ingle's address given as Wilson-road, Camberwell

Thomas Ingle, 30, b. India, solicitor, is living with his father Henry in the 1881 census in Camberwell.  Henry is 78, occupation 'Examr of Stores', b. Ashby De La Zouch, Leicester, England.  He is listed as married but there is no wife or other family listed; it could be a transcription mistake or his wife could be visiting elsewhere.

If you have not seen them the IGI at www.familysearch.org has the birth details of the children.

George Henry Nathaniel, born 2 Apr 1859, bapt 14 Mar 1860, Kotree, Maharashtra
Charles Ferman, born 11 Jul 1861, bapt 5 Jan 1862, Colaba-Bombay, Maharashtra
Alfred Davis, born 4 Nov 1862, bapt 16 Jan 1863, Colaba-Bombay, Maharashtra
Eleanor Jane, born 7 Apr 1867, bapt 8 Jun 1867, Bombay, Maharashtra
Emily Maude, born 13 Jan 1869, bapt 7 Apr 1869, Colaba-Bombay, Maharashtra

These are extracted entries, probably from the Presidency returns, and you can order these films through your local FHC. Quite often the baptisms will name sponsors and godparents.

From www.fibis.org there are a few entries as well.

George was a purser in the HM Indian Navy. Birth notice for Alfred in the Bombay Almanac, in 1862 which states this.

There were other INGLEs there as well, probably brothers, and all sons of Henry. Henry married Elizabeth DUNN in 1826.

Were Eleanor Spencers parents Nathaniel and Jane. There are references to them on the IGI and at the fibis site as well. Nathaniel SPENCER married Jane MORIN 19 May 1824 Bombay.

This site is worth a look as well
