Can someone lookup Elizabeth Jewson on the 1900 US federal census for Fond Du Lac, WI please? The parent information may solve a problem. My wife’s line has a brickmaker b. 1795 in  March, Cambridgeshire, England named James Driver. He and his wife, Sarah, christened the following children in March Parish Church.

Elizabeth 1819 died 1821
John 1822
James 1823
Elizabeth b.24 July 1824, chr. 1824, died 15 Aug 1900 Esterbrook, Fond Du Lac,             marr.  Jarvis Jewson ??
William 1828
Martinmass (Martell on 1841 census) 1829
Fisher 1823
William F 1834
George 1836 (on my wife’s line)
William 1838

I believe Elizabeth married Jarvis Jewson 26 May 1848 in Norfolk, England and I have found a 1880 US Census record for James Driver in Fond Du Lac where he is designated “FatherL” (father-in-law) and living with Jarvis Jewson (spelt as Jawson). So when did he he leave England? I have him and Sarah living in Terrington-St-Clement on the 1861 English census but with no entry on the 1871 census. However there is a civil death registration for Sarah Driver in the Wisbech district Jan-Mar 1867 so I doubt he left before that. Perhaps the US Federal 1870 census could confirm his presence in USA? Also did any of his other children also cross the Pond?
Now comes the complications. As Nutkin recorded 20 Jul 05 the civil registration records Jarvis Jewson as marring Elizabeth Betts (not Driver) June quarter 1848. My information on a Driver marriage comes from the IGI database. I’ve checked parish records (via Cambridgeshire FHS web site ) without any luck to confirm either of these surnames. Elizabeth could have been a widow when she married Jarvis or used both names or even, bizarrely, the registrar may have mistaken a variation of ‘Elizabeth’ as a surname. But whatever the explanation the IGI ‘Driver’ surname fits nicely with James’ designation as father-in-law on the 1880 US census. However we need to consider another possible relationship between James and Jarvis that of uncle and nephew. IGI records James as marring Sarah Jewson, Norfolk 1833. (See a copy at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=darlacooper&id=I26656
This is a good match to the Sarah who was Richard Jewson’s sister and Jarvis Jewson’s aunt. However this is dated 10 years after Elizabeth’s birth in1823. So James may have an earlier wife also named Sarah (that’s the name on the March parish records). I’m hoping the US federal 1900 census may shed some light.

I am happy to receive comments etc.

David

Hi David,

Jarvis Jewson was the brother of the Richard Jewson I am researching.  The whole family left the UK in the early 1850s.

I have him in Fond Du Lac on the 1860 census.

I will try to find my records to see if I can find the record. I am sure that somewhere he is mentioned in this forum in a thread about the Jewsons.

Do a searcg in Rootschat for Jewson. The threads will be found.

One note,

If you go to the USGENWEB site for Wisconsin and look through the census records you will find all the Jewsons in the 5th Ward of the city. However they are transcribed there as Jenson.
