Passengers to USA in 1850s
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 15:04 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone may be able to see if a William Breeze, b.1824 Norfolk, England emigrated to the USA at any time.

We have his mother remarrying and moving to he USA on the "Emerald Isle" inNovember 1854 and would like to know if he travelled with them or joined them out there.

The only records we can find, at present, in the UKis mention of his birth.

Hi,
Mother's married name was Cath(Kath)erine Jewson. She travelled with her husband, Richard, and children and family from Richard's first marriage.

We also wonder whether Cath's family from first marriage travelled as well.

I looked at the immigration records today and found a William Breeze, age 27, leaving Liverpool 21 Apr 1851 on the Conqueror.  I must admit, I didn't look at all of the entries they gave, but this one had the highest ranking of parameters that I gave.  It may be yours.  Also, I have found a William Breeze in Onondaga County New York with family in 1860 and in Cayuga County New York in 1880 with the same family.  I cannot find him in 1870.  Maybe he took a trip back to England during that time.  The 1880 census you can view at <www.familysearch.org>.  Here is the 1860 transcription------Genealiza

1860  New York  Onondaga, Manlius

Dwell# 116    Family# 116

William Breeze, 36, male, white, day laborer, $1000, $250,
                          Eng

Hannah    "     , 35, female, white, Eng

Robert      "     , 16, male, white,     "    ,  attends school

William      "     , 12, male, white,     "    ,  attends school

Christopher  "  , 9, male, white,      "     ,  attends school

Henry J       "    , 6, male, white,      "     , attends school

Alice           "    , 4, female, white,    "

John          "     , 11/12, male, white,   "

The 1880 census shows John's birthplace as NY.  I imagine the other children are born in NY, also.

Many thanks Genealiza,

Sounds as if this might be the right family.

We know that Catherine's second husband had two sons by his first marriage who went to the USA before their father. This ties up that William could have gone with them.

Thanks again for your help

Hi Again Genealiza,

Does the ships records show who travelled with the William Breeze you mention.

Also could you see if there were any JEWSONs on the same ship.
The family names seem to tie up as William's father, who died before William was 10 was Robert and William's eldest is also Robert. We are searching hard here to tie these all together.
Any further help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Bruce

We also wonder whether Cath's family from first marriage travelled as well.

I didn't see Cath's first married name so can't check for you. Do you have the family on EMERALD ISLE to NY Nov. 15, 1854? They are

Richard (Sr) 50/51, ship---
Cath, 50/51, wife
Francis 18
Bartholomew 17
Richard (Jr) 14
Hannah 12
Eliz? 29 housewife
Elizabeth 5
John 4
Rebecca 2 1/2
Jains?? John?? 2 1/2 (the age is in a different col. and further to the right in the DIED ON THE VOYAGE column is the comment "of diarrhea" so this little one died on board ship)

If you find your family in the 1870 census you can see if they naturalized, and if they did, you can hunt for their nat records -- see http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ for help. Click on NY if you think they settled there, and then check the online nat records FIRST, then read how to get offline ones if you don't find them

Hi Eillo,

Many thanks for the list.
Elizabeth 29 was the DIL of Richard. She was married to Richard's son, Jarvis, by his first wife.
What we do not know is when Jarvis and his brother Fisher Jewson travelled to the USA.
They both went earlier than their father.
We have found them all living in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin in the 1860 census but, as yet, do not know when the two brothers moved across the pond.

William Breeze was their step brother so we hoped that might all have travelled together.

Any help on when Jarvis & Fisher Jewson travelled would be greatly appreciated.
