Barlestone Lodge - Newbold family

Hi there,

my ancestor's brother was a wealthy man who lived in "Barlestone Lodge" near Barlestone.

I have looked at an old map and found two separate buildings referred to as "Barlestone Lodge".

Can anyone shed any light on whether the buildings still exist? Would anyone know which was lived in by the Newbold family in the late 1700s / early 1800s?

Hello Sean,

You've had a look at an old map of the area but I doubt if many RootsChatters have looked. If you could say whereabouts the buildings you spotted are located then maybe a Leicestershire member could throw some more light on the subject.

Right- been into the local studies library & found a lovely book called:
Know your Barlestone:the history of a Leics village. by Keith B Hexatall. No publisher given but No. 9030438.  ISBN's (i used to be a librarian) should be 10 digits so try 000 in front. Ref in L'boro only.
very nice book - info about houses/family/census etc. no index but easy to scan through.
Refs to Newbold family as follows:

1850-1
Mr J.N.Newbold had a grocers shop on the RH side of the Methodist Chapel.

16 yearold J.N.Newbold (son of above?) assisted Charles Wood, a baker & grocer in a shop oppersite the methodist Chapel  (on site of 11-19 newbold Rd.

Shoemaker: John Newbold (22)

1849 Commercial Directory of Leics:
Trades: John Newbold. Boot & Shoemaker (presumably as above)

Primitive methodist Chapel Built 1833:
'Members paid Thomas Newbold £12.18s for the building ground.
The builder was a member of the Newbold family who bill for the building of the Chapel was£36.16s'
Thomas Newbold was superindentant of the Sunday School.

Old buildings listed did not have any Newbold family listed. There is a Barlestone Lodge Farm located on the West side of the Village. Pic in book from today.
earliest ref 1850 was then Spencers Lodge. 1851 unoccupied. by 1871 William Wildman until abt 1877. 1881 John Dean & family throuigh to today.

Also Church farm now Mortimer Hse. in 1851 was barlestone Hse. the site of one of 2 manors listed in the Doomsday book. other was the Manor hse. baker family for generations/then pegg/catrill/norris.

The Manor Hse in Bosworth Rd was originally a farm built abt 1723. owned by Abrham Wright/power family/Kirkmans to today.

3 main families - Hextall - farmers & butchers
                          Baker - farmers & gentry
                          Storer - labourers

lots of other family details but no more mention of Newbold.

Hope this is of some use. I used to be an information librarian so enjoyed the job    you should be able to borrow the book on interlibrary loan if you are in the UK.

sorry for the belated thanks for the wonderful research you have done for me. I have only just come back from a computer disaster!

Yes, those Newbolds are mine. JN Newbold was James Neville Newbold. His father, Thomas Newbold, died as a young man and James' mother Catherine Newbold (nee Price) remarried Charles Wood.

There were lots of James Neville Newbolds - I suspect a Neville family married in somehow.
