Don't overlook the 1831 East Ilsley "census"  ;)  A Drunken Worthless Creature

There are some Westalls featured, dee-jay.

I have Toomer's Newbury Census of 1815 on a CD which was with the March 2009 edition of the Who Do You Think You Are magazine.

John Talbot age 48 lived at Union Court, Northbrook Street with Margaret Talbot age 47.  There is a note that she died in March 1816.

There is also an Agnes Talbot living in Northbrook Street.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the prompt responses, folks.

Newburychap:
I only wanted to know if there was a John TALBOT in Newbury as early as 1815 as the only TALBOT resident recorded in 1841 was Anne at Speen.  I've already expended precious cash for the Overseers Records in which my 'transient' WESTALLs do not feature.

Sloe Gin:
Having just purchased the WESTAL[L] variants from the Berks FHS Marriage Index, I'm very tempted by that publication .....  ;D  However, fresh leads now take me into the Tilehurst and Padworth PRs in pursuit of the issue of William WESTALL & Sophia CLARK who married at Padworth 02 Sep 1788 and had a son William [possibly 'my' Bargeman?] baptized Tilehurst 31 Aug 1800 according to the IGI.

Ivygreen:
Bless you for the details.  Was there by any chance mention of John TALBOT's occupation?  I've located 2 possible candidates with a wife Sarah born out of County.

Dee-Jay,

Not quite the info your seeking, but from the Berks Burial Index (ex BFHS) is this burial;
22-4-1840  William  Westall  age 39 in Newbury St.Nicholas register.

This may fill in a gap.

Thank you for your trouble, Alan but this is the chap who's been my brickwall for yonks because of his untimely death.  Obviously he's not recorded in a census and, because of the very nature of his work, his origins could be anywhere.   ???

One of my correspondents recently discovered a baptism at Newbury St Nicolas for John Clark WESTALL, son of William & Sophia, which 'kick-started' a search for the parents' marriage and his siblings because he is a strong contender for the John WESTALL, Bargeman, who spent part of his life in Newbury and the remainder in Reading with occupations connected to canal business.

Having a bargeman on my maternal side and a night coachman on the paternal have been huge barriers to overcome but the knowledge gained in their pursuit for the last 20+ years has enabled me to assist many others in knocking down brickwalls.  The very nature of their occupations contributed to their early demise and, without mentions in the Poor Law records or a census, 'sideway sweeps' for any siblings have often been thwarted also.   It pays to keep an open mind in this business but at times it feels like a dual carriageway .....  ::)

Hi Dee-jay

Sorry for the delay in replying.  No I'm afraid there are no details of occupation in the 1815 census for John Talbot.

Hi ivygreen

Please could you be kind enough to see if there is a William and/or Jane BAILEY mentioned in the Toomer census.  Thanks!

Sloe

There are two Jane Baily's (without the e) one aged 50 of Quarrington's Yard, Mary Hill and one aged
9 of Mary Hill, east side of.

There is also a William Baily aged 3 also of Mary Hill, east side of.

There is no William or Jane Bailey spelt that way.

Thanks very much for that.  It will be the adult Jane who may be of interest - does it show anyone else in the same household?
