This is no 'typo'!  From all accounts, Joseph Toomer was a three-times Mayor of Newbury.  This unofficial census appears to have been taken between late-May and early-June 1815:  updates made until 1878.

Wonderful, Newbie!  The index is modern [2003?] and, according to the Berks FHS Journal Dec 2003 arrangements were then in place for microfilming the whole census of some 5000 residents.

In 1820 'my' William WESTALL married Sarah LEWIS, a minor, at Newbury St Nicolas, both otp.  He provided a perfect signature and was subsequently recorded in PRs as a bargemen at Bartholomew Street.  He died, very inconveniently[!], before 1841, so I can't hazard a guess at where he was actually born or likely parentage.  However, I do know there were other WESTALLs in Newbury  - a possible sibling John also involved with the canal as either bargemen or agent.

These have been 'on the back burner' for years 'cos my Grandfather told 'porkies' about his age at marriage and adopted a first Christian name that didn't feature in either civil registration or baptism!  Another week won't hurt me .........  Kind regards.

Can SKS please check to see if there is mention of a John TALBOT in this index?  I've recently discovered that a Sarah WESTAL married him at Newbury only 4 days after the marriage of 'my' William WESTALL there, so I'm trying to establish if there was a link.

A transcript (and index) is available on CD from Berks FHS (£7).

The original is at the BRO, but they won't get it out as they have fiched it and expect you to use the fiche (no index).

A copy of the fiche is in Newbury Library and West Berks Museum have a photocopy of the original. I think both have the CD.
