How about another long shot:
(Eaton) Hastings, Berkshire— miss-spelt of course; "Haisting"
I would opt for Berkshire, not Hertfordshire, anyway.

Good luck with it, it's a good one....

I have cut out the letters from the initial posting which are causing problems, and put them on the top line of this pic.  Below them I've put letters which look similar, from both of B's postings.

I think the letters in question are Capital H, small h, and small t.

Does this help anyone??

Have you tried searching the death indexes/national burial index for Timothy ................ the less common name?

Thank you, everyone, for your input to my query. You have really been putting your mind to this one. My apologies for such a large second attachment. I hadn't realized the size of it. Sorry for any inconvenience when you were reading it.

I shall stay with my original thought that these two words each started with "H" and "h". The smaller "h" does not resemble the "b" in buried, in my opinion. Therefore, this word must begin with "h," I do believe. I also don't think it is Lancashire, either.

I do think that Prue's humdinger notion for Hitchin, Hertfordshire, must surely fit the bill, or be extremely close to it. Good one, Prue!

Rian, I gave a lot of thought to Berkshire originally, but no longer. Your suggestion of (Eaton) Hastings is a good one, too. However, I reasonably think that the writer would have managed to put "s" in the word for the sound. Having said that, I could also say that the “ch” should have been in Hitchin (if it is correct)!

I have spent some hours searching the AA road disc and MS Autoroute without success. So, I ask myself who else is available to solve this puzzle? Hence my posting - and look at the solid replies of help!

Casalguidi, I found the death registration for Timothy Wilson - the only one in that quarter - in Durham. I had checked all these deaths before, as I noted on posting this question. I had not checked any of them on the Burial index, however.

(I believe these folks are relatives of my GtGtGndmother, who was born Eliza Wilson in 1809, at Hayes, Middlesex. She is the widow of William Drury, the last person noted above in 1878. I only know of these persons because of this writing we have been checking, hence no places of death (or where they lived) are known to me.)

Perhaps yet another of us who rises to this challenge will post a different name here. Thanks again to you all for your input. It just shows how much we like to help each other, not to mention being first across the 'finish line', of course. Good Game! Good Game!

Kind Regards,

B

There is one Timothy Wilson died aged 3 in October 1840, West Riding Yorks, Leeds

No Ann Wilsons in October, but there is in November, West Riding again

There are two William Drury's wrong months again, West Riding and one Cheshire

Andrew, thank you very much indeed for your posting. I shall have to get weaving and order a death certificate (or two!) to find more details about the elusive Wilson folk.

It was very kind of you to spend your time finding all the names for me, and I greatly appreciate it.

(Just seen your other posting, too. Thanks)

Kind Regards,

B

In the Burial list Andrew posted there is the following

8   Sep   1849   Elizabeth   WILSON   67   Herts   Hitchin, St Mary

I think your handwritten list is a death/burial
3  Sep 1848   Elizabeth WILSON   Hitting Hertshire

This is a wild assumption, but if your handwritten list is transcripts from memorials/gravestones, which are hard to decipher when worn, the 8 could be mistranstribed as a 3 and 1848 and 1849 might also be confused if the sandstone oon the headstone is worn.

Just thought i'd confuse the issue further  ;D

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your thoughts. Anything is possible, and confusion is the middle name in this game!

However, I shall 'stay' with all the information provided by Andrew. The writing on the page is quite clear, and all other handwritten information on other pages has proved to be accurate. I do not believe any of it was taken from gravestones, but compiled from known family details noted through the years.

It is always nice to hear the views of fellow researchers and I pleased to have read your input. Thank you for your time.

Happy searching to you - and to everyone else - in 2006.

Regards,

B
