Thanks again, Jeannie!
That's a variation on an entry I found for 1861, which set me off on this trail.......!!
Then I found a Solomon Flatow in the Leeds and Bradford 1853 Directory, as a 'watch & jewellery dir.' with the Boar Lane address and also in 1827 as a China Merchant in Dock Street, Leith, Edinburgh, in the Post Office Annual Directory.
In the 1871 Census for the Joel family, there is actually a note saying that husband is a watch manufacturer employing 8 men & 4 boys and has gone to Leeds!!.......and I found him on Leeds Census in an hotel in Boar Lane!!
By 1881 Jane Joel is a widow and has a Benjamin Flatau, nephew born in Middx, staying with her .............and I suddenly twigged this week that he's one of mine!! His Dad, Morris Flatau, was born c 1819 in either Prussia or Scotland, depending on which Census, and Morris is my 3 x Gt Grandfather! Today I got Leon Joel's Marriage Cert and Jane was down as Flatom and her Pa is....Solomon Flatow, a General Dealer!!
Jane is born in Edinburgh around the time Solomon is there but I have found no trace of the family on Scotlands People.
All my Flataus are London-based and I have Morris's 1842 Marriage Cert, which gives his father as Solomon Flatau.
I am desperately trying to link in to Solomon Flatow.
If Jane and Morris are siblings, I'm there!! The search continues...........!!
I had no idea that that area of Coventry was full of jewellers!
As you are a retired Watchmaker and Jeweller from Leeds, you obviously know a lot about them!
Thank you again for all the trouble you have gone to in trying to dig out my man!!
Kind regards.
Ros
