I've travelled my family back tk andrew McGowan b 1841 married Ellen McGowan. He was a painter and born in Scotland and the family moved to Gloucestershire where it more or less stayed. Anyone find anything going further back from Andrew?

Use Scotlands People to look for his origins.  It’s a pay per view site via purchase of credits

When did he marry Ellen.  Use free bmd to find that info & buy a copy of the marriage cert to establish his fathers name

He didn't marry Ellen McGowan - he married Ellen Crook.  See freebmd for marriage details. 

marriage cert  is available on Ancestry - his father was also Andrew - occ hair weaver

Most local libraries have free Ancestry access
