Can anyone please help with dating this portrait which is either of my friend's 3rd great grandfather who was James Garnett (1779-1828) and had a daughter - Mary Garnett.

OR

It's of my friend's 2nd great grandfather who was also James Garnett (1795-1850) and he had a daughter Mary Ellen Garnett.

It's all rather complicated.  This BRADFORD family in the UK were in the wool textile business.

Any historical background would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

My guess would be that he looks to be more like age 55 than 49 so I say the second James.
I am sure that you will get other opinions that will also help.
The outfit doesn't help with dating as there is only 5 years between the two. Certainly from a wealthy family to have such a beautiful portrait in a very elaborate gilt frame.

First of all I'm having a problem with your dates.
You say James Snr. b. 1779 is the father of James Jnr. b. 1795.
He would only have 16. Highly unlikely.
The portrait could be 1830's-40's & he looks in his 40's-50's.
Arguably he could be either I'm afraid.
However more likely James Jnr.

Hi Vanessa, Your friend may already have this information. l found on findmypast In the Leeds Mercury June 18th 1842 the birth of a daughter to James Garnett of Mill House Bradford.

Also in the Bradford Daily Telegraph Friday 6th January 1888 the obituary for William Garnett which mentions James Garnett. William was the senior partner for William Garnett & Co. which was the oldest company established by James Garnett early 1800s. The first mill was at Paper Hall Court Bradford.Three years later he opened a mill at Barkerend and was joined by his elder brother William (father of deceased) and sons Richard,James and William.James sen died in 1828 and William died in 1834. The business was carried on by Richard, James and William (deceased). Richard died in 1848 and James in 1850. James (Jun) left his son James as a member of the firm.
