Census look-up please 1841 and 1851 Glasgow

Hi all,

I live in Australia and would really appreciate help. I am seeking details of Robert McCulloch and wife Janet McCulloch maiden surname Donald ( also shown as Jessie McDonald)

Their children born Glasgow - Ann born 12 Aug1822 married James Anderson in December 1841
Robert born 7 Dec1824 migrated to Australia 1853
Janet/Jessie born 9 Sept 1827

I am not sure if these census contain an address for family or the area in Glasgow where they were living, but if so that would be of great help to me.

Hi Noelene, I am new to all this I have found a Robert age 26 and Jessie 22 in 1851 living Hutchesontown which I believe is Glasgow. I don't know if anyone else would be able to find more for you. Sorry Noelene , I've re checked the 1841 indices and can find no trace of the family.

There are several entries matching individual names but none of them appear to link in any way to a single family (although this can be difficult to ascertain from the index alone).

Thanks for persisting with this one for me.

I am pretty sure that the 1851 entry for Robert and Jessie which you both found for me are my Robert and his sister, so that has been a major breakthrough.

I was hoping that a further check of the 1841 might reveal something in light of the District where they were in 1851, but no such luck. I am not sure where to go from here.

As Robert and his sisters births are shown on the OPR'S as being "lawful child" does this mean that his parents would have definitely been married?

If you write to the address I gave you before you can order the marriage or banns, give their names and a guestimate as to year of marriage if they can't find there is no charge I forgot to say it should be addressed to the General Regastrar and end with Scotland after postecode.

They would have been married prior to 1821, and so far I have not been able to locate a marriage or banns in the OPR's

The GRO will conduct a limited search but it can be costly ........

this family is the only one in the area that comes anywhere close to matching your family BUT there are several major differences

thanks for the latest details from the 1841 census.

Unfortunately I cannot claim this family. They are a family I found some years ago in the IGI. Father is Robert McCulloch and mother Jean Thompson.  I just re-checked (because of Jane not Jean) and a search for children using the parents names brought up all those shown in the census with corresponding dates etc.

I suppose we now should assume my lot were not in Glasgow for the 1841. I have just re-checked Free Cen for recent additions - no luck of course.

I forgot to ask- the fact that the births in the OPR's show Robert and Janet McCulloch's children as

"lawful child"

Can I assume that Robert and Janet were lawfully married?
