Dungarvan

Would it be possible to find out when gas lights were first in use in Dungarvan?

My Father had a cutting many years old about a close relative who he said had put in gas lights in Dungarvan and when the relative died, were he was buired, his grave had a eternal flame on it.

I never saw the cutting but my elder sisters clearly remember it.

They said the name was Corman/Gorman.

If any one can help we would be grateful.

John,

It might be worthwhile trying the Dungarvan Museum Society. http://www.irishclans.com/dungarvan.html

The correct name is COMAN - the location is still the same Dungarvan.

John,

I thought your comment about throwing light on the name when you are searching for information about gas lights was excellent. You obviously have a subtle sense of humour.

Enter Coman in the table in the first URL here and search for ALL. Those that lived in Dungarvan, Co .Waterford during the period of Griffiths Valuations of Ireland (1848-64) are shown. The second URL shows the distribution of the name Coman throughout Ireland during the same period.

Waterford County Museum is in Dungarvan. It may be worth approaching them.

As a matter of interest, where are you located John ?

Best Wishes, Christopher

John,

Im wondering is your search restricted to gas lights or would you like more information about your Coman ancestors ?

Best Wishes, Christopher

Christopher,

I would be most please to receive any infromation on my "coman" ancestors,
the gas lights was the only link to my Irish ancestors, until yesterday when I received my grandmother's birth certicate, which had my great grandmother's maiden name on.

thank you and best wishes,

john

John,

I have found one member of the Coman family
1850s Dr John Coman worked at the Fever Hospital, Abbeyside
Waterford County Museum - Desperate Haven - The Famine In Dungarvan
Several people named Coman are on the Genealogical Find Aid for Dungarvan

www.dungarvanmuseum.org/exhibit/web/WAIVersion/article/87/2/?lang=en
www.waterfordcountymuseum.org/exhibit/web/WAIVersion/article/84/?lang=en
I found Catherine Coman born Ireland 1850.  Wife of David Coman.  www.familysearch.org
Mentioned on USA Census 1880 (Portland, Muntnomah, Oregon)
This next site mentions Miss Catherine Coman and Dr Patrick Coman of Dungarvan http://tiara.ie/obidxc.htm

Broken link- please let us know if you find a new link to this information

Christopher,

Thanks for your help, I've been away for a week, have been checking out  the sites you have mentioned.

The Coman's seem to have settled mainly in the norfolk area of the UK and a lot have gone over the USA.

I have also made up a list of the coman's in the Yorkshire area, and will now check these out.

1891 census shows a margaretha e. coman born in 1880 in Hull

margaret emma coman Born in Hull 1879

mauguerite emma coman Marriaged 1898 in Hull to a charles frederick glover

I believe these are all the same person

Again thanks  for your help,

from what I can find there were at least to coman's in dunvargan, could be

many more - john coman - surgeon / patrick coman  - apothecary

I am still looking for that  gas lights connection.
