obit James Rankin, Jan 16, 1915, Manhattan, New York

On familysearch, there is a death of James Rankin, Jan 16, 1915 in Manhattan, widowed, salesman, son of Thomas Rankin and Sarah Sloss. James was born Jan 4, 1836 in Ireland.
I have been researching the family of Thomas Rankin and Sarah Sloss who is sometimes referred to as Sarah Camman or Jane Canning. In particular, their daughter Mary Rankin who married Edward Johnston and Mary was born Dec 2, 1839 and died Apr 25, 1934 in Ballindrum, Moneymore, Ireland.
Perhaps an obit for James Rankin would reveal if it is the same family as Mary Rankin married to Edward Johnston. Or John Rankin who died Dec 16, 1931 in High Street, Moneymore. Or Thomas Rankin who died 18 Jan 1934 in Dumfries, Scotland. thank you, Peggy

Thomas Rankin who died in Dumfries in 1934 was the son of Thomas Rankin & Jane Canning. He was a retired coachman and had been married to Catherine Forbes who he seems to have married in 1879 in Kelvin (Glasgow). She pre-deceased him. Informant was his son John Rankin. GROS deaths 821/39.

Family appear in the 1891 Scottish census for Monimail, Fife. Husband, wife and 7 children. Husband born Londonderry. GROS 448/2/121.

There are 21 trees on Ancestry which have Thomas junior and wife Catherine Forbes, showing him to have died in the USA in 1934.  They all look to be wrong, based on the above death certificate. I doubt that Thomas Rankin ever set foot in the USA.

Thank you, Sandra for the death notices regarding James Rankin. I see that everything goes to Thomas J. Rankin whom I wonder if it is his nephew. In James’ brother John’s obituary in 1931, it is mentioned that his son Thomas James is in the USA.
And Elwyn, I have looked at the trees on ancestry for Thomas Rankin Jr. and many of them do have him dying in the USA which is not true. I doubt also if he ever set foot in the USA. Many have his mother as Sarah Faulds which is also not true. Thomas’ birth and death certificates say that his mother was Jane Canning but Thomas is mentioned in the obituary of his brother John who died in 1931 in Moneymore and John’s birth record in 1847 says his mother was Sarah Sloss.
