Prestwich Asylum Admissions, Late 1800s ... Lookup please
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 13:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I understand that there is a CD available for Prestwich Asylum covering admissions for the late 19th century!

I have a great-great grandfather that Oldham Local Studies theorizes might have been committed to Prestwich before he died.  He was born and lived his whole life in Oldham, where he worked as a hatter and his burial listing at St. Margaret’s Hollinwood states:

1888, November 19th, James Wolfenden, aged 69 years, abode Prestwich

And everything matches accept the abode -- his wife is also buried there.

So, if SKS has this information, if you could possibly check the admission records for 1881-1888 for James, that would be great.  I know that in 1881 he was still living in Hollinwood and so his admission would have been after the census!

TIA for any and all assistance!

Sincerely,

Diane  :)

Hi Diane

Sorry I do not have the info you are after, and as far as I know the CD is available only from here http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Bookshop/index.html

1612 Prestwich Asylum Index to Admissions 1851-1901 - £7.50 (£6.38 ex-VAT), 90gm
An index to the admissions of over 22,000 men and women from the opening of the Asylum to the end of March 1901. Shows details of name, age & birthplace for each patient, with dates of admission and discharge. For some patients additional information may be included. Because the census returns for the Asylum list only patients' initials, this register is invaluable as a means of identifying patients in the census returns.

Hi Ken, yes, that must be the publication that my "source" was referring to!  I see that MLFHS also has it via genfair.  With only one person to look for though, to purchase it isn't quite in my budget at the moment ... when Archive CD books ran their special I ordered several disk!  I will keep the title in mind for the future!

Thanks, Diane :-)

Have confirmed that James Wolfenden, who died in 1888 in Prestwich, is our James Wolfenden from Oldham.  Found the letter of administration for his estate!

So, it would seem that he was at Prestwich at the time of his death ... would like to confirm that he was at the Asylum!

Thanks, Diane :-)
