Andrews/Greenwood connection
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 08:24 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that some one can help sort out this puzzle for me as I've been trying for some time with no postive result.

My Greatgrandmother  Mary Dewar was born abt 1824,I know nothing about where she was born or  who her Parents were.
She arrived in Nelson in 1842 on the Prince of Wales. She married Joseph Andrews in Nelson in 1844 and she and Joseph had about 10 children.
Joseph died in Hoults Valley in 1907.
And some time after this  Mary moved to Hastings where she died on the 21 Jan 1916 age 91.
Now my puzzle begins, she is buried in Hastings cemetery Block B Plot Number 90, also in the same plot is an Edith Greenwood, she died on the 26 Dec 1930. I am trying to find a connection between the two women, are they Mother and Daughter, or Grandmother and Grandchild.

I have written to the Sexton, at Hastings cemetery
the Hastings District Council and the HB Branch of NZSG,with out being able to establish any link but really want to establish some links between the Andrews and Greenwood Families before I buy any Certificates. Can any one help.

Hi Jericho,

Could they perhaps be sisters, or sisters-in-law?

Do you have the death or marriage certificate for your known ancestor, Mary DEWAR? The former should give the parents, as in the early years the latter did not list the parents. If not, it would be a safe bet to buy the death certificate at least.

I'll see what I can dig up.

Hi Riley

As far as I know Mary was the only one in her family to go to NZ, from what I've been told, don't have Mary Andrews certificate as yet, as I've only found where she was buried a while ago, it was always believed that she was buried in the family plot in Nelson, and it wasn't until I found her in Hastings that we knew for sure where she died. There are a few Greenwoods buried in Hastings, and from what its says on the information about her plot it was paid for by Mrs Greenwood, so I'm trying to find the connection before I send away for the certificates. As far as I know Mary and Joseph Andrews didn't have a Daughter called Edith.
All your help would be appreciated.

Could be the wrong Mary.

Being one of the early familes to arrive, there should be extra information from the local history places, esp Nelson.

I have checked this info as far as getting the obituary from the local Newspaper, and it says relict of the late Joseph Andrews of Nelson. So I'm fairly certain she is my Greatgrandmother.

On the death certificate it should give all the ages of the living children, plus parents etc.

How old was Edith when she died ?

Have you got Edith's obituary ?

Unless she died young, it will be Marys daughter not granddaughter.

Nelson does have great family history resources for all the early families and it will be worth checking out the local records.

My guess is Mary came up to Hastings to live with her daughter.

Get the death certificate of Mary anyway and I will have a scan for the Andrews-Greenwood marriage.

Where abouts are you ?

                                                :)   Mark

Hi Mark

As I said to Riley, I don't think that Mary and Joseph had a daughter Edith, thats why I'm looking for more information before I buy the certificate.I have no idea how old Edith was when she died. Yes I have done most of my research in Nelson already, but could not find Mary there and have only just found her in Hastings. Yes I am planning to get Mary death certificate but finances are a little restricted at present. I am living on the Gold Coast, so its not as easy now to do all my research, like when I was living in NZ.

Gidday Jericho,

Go to the Nelson City Council Early Settlers Database at
http://www.ncc.govt.nz/net/settlers/search.aspx

Search parameters:
Surname: DEWAR
Year: 1842

I won't tell you what I found, but it answers two of your questions.

Happy hunting, riley

Edith Greenwood second daughter of J & V Greenwood, died 24th dec 1930, aged 47.

Joseph Greenwood           died        1907  aged  62
Virtue Emily Greenwood    died        1922  aged  71

No Greenwoods living in Hastings- Napier on freeholders list 1882, but one in Waimea and a Joseph on the West Coast.

does Virtue ring a bell ?
