Henry BATEUP 1842-??
« on: Yesterday at 21:08 »
Trying also to find Martha and Thomas BATEUP's second son Henry, born 1842 in Chippendale. Married Eliza Jane HIGGINS in 1863 and they had seven children from 1864-1874. Three died young and one was a stillbirth. Surviving children were Lydia Mercy 1864, Clara Jane 1869 and Sydney William 1874.

In Jan 1869 Henry put a note in the paper stating that he was not responsible for any debts incurred by Eliza, so things may have been getting rocky by then.

In April 1887 Eliza put a notice in the paper saying that unless Henry returned within a month she intends to get married. She did not marry as far as I can find but may have had more children as an In Memoriam Notice appears in the paper in July 1909, which was placed by "her children" Florence and Sidney Wilson. Eliza died in July 1908 and was buried at Rookwood. A Florence Murphy is in the same grave according to the Cemetery database.

Henry and Eliza's eldest daughter Lydia placed a notice in the newspapers a couple of months after her mother died looking for father Henry and sister Clara BATEUP. The other surviving son Sydney William BATEUP seems to have disappeared as well.

Were Florence and Sidney WILSON actually Clara and Sydney BATEUP?

Nothing found for Henry after 1874 apart from possibly a couple of appearances in the Gazette about some unclaimed letters. Perhaps he disappeared about 1880, which would be seven years before Eliza said she would be getting married again if he did not show up.

No death in NSW, QLD, SA, VIC or WA, unless he changed his name.

Can anyone assist please.

A death notice was placed in 1960 for Florence Jane WILSON in Sydney Morning Herald 14th Sept.
I will not post it here as it it has information about possibly living people, but it basically says

Died in hospital aged 84 and was the mother of (one female) and grandmother of (one female) and great grandmother of three people.

A husband is not mentioned and it seems by her death indexing,(NSW BMD) her parents were not known.

Thanks Sue.

Unless it is coincidence she is buried with Eliza Bateup, then she is probably the "daughter" Florence mentioned in the In Memoriam notice in 1909.

It is a good many years between 1909 when Eliza died and 1960.

Just worth considering.....

Grave sites are frequently re-used with there being no relationship between the people interred.

If Florence's parents were not known (Per NSW BMd), how did she come to be buried with her mother?

Looks like she was indeed a daughter.

I do note that the birth of the child Sydney is recorded for registration without naming the father

BATEUP, Sydney William
5071/1874
Mother ELIZA JANE
At REDFERN

I would be thinking he was in fact the son of William WILSON and that is why he is mentioned as Sidney WILSON in the Memoriam.
It seems Henry was well out of the picture at this stage.

Thanks Sue.

In the baptism record for Sydney William at St Silas' Waterloo in 1874, Henry is named as the father. But as you say he was probably well out of the picture.

Starts to make sense now.

Where is Clara Jane BATEUP born 1869 then?
