Devlin family connections.
« on: Yesterday at 16:32 »
Hi everyone I am trying to find out if there are any people out there who were connected to the Devlin family through marriage who were related to Mary Ann Madden. Laura Gallagher and John Devlin. Terence Devlin a shoe maker on the Falls Road was the head of the Devlin  family and all the people mentioned here are buried in the same grave. Terence Devlins daughter was my granny. If anyone knows of a connection please can you message me. Gerry

As an aside there's a Terry Devlin currently a footballer for Northern Ireland and Portsmouth. Is he connected to your Devlins?

Hi Martin thank you for your reply. Problem I have is identifying a Devlin member who had family in the Spinner street area of the Falls Road. My granny Jane Devlin worked in her fathers Shoe Shop beside the Clonard picture house along with other members of the family. I am particulary interested in finding information on John Devlin who was my granny's younger brother who used to visit my mum and her sister in Broadway. John and his wife had a child adopted in 1939 and then they apparently parted company. I knew nothing about this until recently when I was contacted by a family member to know if I knew John Devlin which I conformed. I am trying to find some one in these families I listed who knew why John done this to the child.

To start with this thread should be on the ANTRIM board with other Belfast queries but not sure if 'report to moderator' function is working at the moment.

Gerry- could you provide dates for the people buried in the plot you mentions (and where it is)?

Here's Terence Devlin and family in 1911-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Smithfield/Falls_Road/186904/
He and son Patrick born Co. Tyrone but daughter Mary born Co.Antrim. Terence and wife Mary only married 6 years.
Son John's birth registration gives mother as Minnie (a nickname for Mary) Kirk.

Marriage of his parents in 1905 gives Terence's father as Patrick Devlin (dead).

Terence, wife Maggie and children in 1901-

In this census Terence, wife Maggie and son Patrick born Cookstown, Co. Tyrone.

Regarding this part of your query- do you have the marriage of John Devlin and his wife? did they have children before this one adopted? all sorts of reasons that could have happened but were the adopted parents related or known to the family?

This looks like Jane Devlin's marriage but you likely already had that-

I was shown a photo of John Devlin with his wife Nora Devlin nee Savage  and a little girl called Mary who was about 3 yrs old. The reason for showing me the photo was to confirm it was John Devlin which I confirmed it was. I was also told John may not have been the child’s father?? So Elizabeth their second child ??who was born to them in 1940 was handed over to the Scanlons who brought her to England and back to Dublin. I have wondered if the girl of 3 had a birth certificate naming John as her father??

Remember not to post details of people who might still be alive.
The marriage appears in PRONI's online index-
M/1937/B1/2326/44/194   John   Devlin   Savage   15th January 1937   Belfast
M/1937/B1/2326/44/194   Nora   Savage   Devlin   15th January 1937   Belfast
Births less than 100 years old will not be indexed online.

May not be the same person but a Mrs. Nora Devlin of [144?] Donegall Pass was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for receiving and overcoat and pair of gloves in April 1944.

I have connections to Devlin's but I'm unsure if they are the same as yours.  Tyrone, area is the best I can give without access to my tree.  The Devlin I can access is Ann Devlin b 1873 married and went to Pennsylvania.  I can also give you names of trees to look at if you have Ancestry.

Thank you for your reply I am not on Ancestry but if any family tree had the names Madden and Gallagher in the tree then that would certainly be right Devlin family tree. The Devlin tree of Terence Devlin who was a shoe maker appears to start in Cookstown then Antrim and ending in Belfast 14 Falls Road. I know some of the Devlins moved to America as we visited their family in Spinner St to see their movies of the new life they had started. Other names to see in their tree would be Kirk as Terence Devlin married at least twice. I just need a living family member who might have known about John Devlin and what happened that he and his wife at the time gave their baby away. The baby was baptised Elizabeth and I would love to give her the information she is looking for. Gerry
