Can someone please offer a suggestion? My Grandparent disappeared.
I am searching for any further information about my Dorking 4xG Grandparents Peter Ratcliff (the son of Peter Ratchcliffe and Sarah Boxshal) and Mary (Rose).
Peter was Baptised at St Martin, Dorking on 11.11.1745, St Martin, Dorking (Peters siblings were Sarah - 1744 and Anne - 1748). Mary Rose, the daughter of Henry Rose and Jane, was Baptised at Kingston on Thames in 1750.
1760 Peter undertook a 7-year apprenticeship with Clockmaker William Risbridger, of Dorking. He apparently, completed the apprenticeship as there is reference in a 2006 Brightwell’s Auction Catalogue offering for sale an,18c mahogany longcase clock inscribed; Peter Patcliffe, Dorking.
1768 Peter married Mary Rose the daughter of Henry Rose and Jane Dudley.
1770 a Peter Ratcliffe is a witness to the marriage of James Lucas and Sarah Hoare at St Martin, Dorking. 12.01.1770.
1772-73. Peter has mention in Manor Court Rolls (aged about 27): Peter Ratcliffe also appears as a juror in the Court sessions and as Headman for his part of town (Information provided by Surrey History Centre).
1784 Mary, the wife of Peter Ratcliffe becomes a beneficiary in the will of her Father Henry Rose, of Kingston on Thames.
The children of Peter and Mary were:
Peter 1771-1773 - Dorking, Jane 1769 - Dorking, Henry 1773-1773 - Dorking, William 1774 - Dorking, Henry 1775 - Kingston on Thames.
I have no further information about Peter as a Clockmaker (I have searched the available online references and the Horological Society).
I haven’t located any further evidence about the Dorking residence or a possible move to Kingston On Thames (where the surviving sons William and Henry are found).
Meanwhile, after such a promising start, Peter, Mary, and their daughter Jane just disappeared. No marriage of Jane, no burials, no clockmaking, no tax records … nothing?
Any suggestions please?
