Francis Johnston was a widower who was born in Ireland, 1796-1801, and emigrated to Canada abt 1847 as per his son Gerrard/Jerrard's information. Gerrard died 18 Jan 1906 in Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac Co., Ontario.
His father Francis is found on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses in Pittsburgh township, Frontenac Co., Ontario as a widower (he had previously been married to Jane Anderson).

the 1871 census link - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01u93/
I don't find him after 1871 on the census. So thinking he died in the 1870s. Can anyone find his death?

Hi,

Not spotting a death for him.

Deaths in Ontario in that time frame were iffy. Ontario didn't start to officially register deaths until late 1869. Compliance in the early years was very spotty. Ontario introduced the 1875 Registration Act,
and compliance began to improve.

Thanks dbree. Perhaps the death of Francis was not recorded. His daughter Jane married to Walter Bell died April 21, 1876 and if there were an obituary for her, perhaps it would mention her father, whether he was still alive.

Just a thought.  On the death certificate for Jane Bell when she passed in 1876, she was presbyterian.

Walter Bell passed in 1893 and he is buried Sand Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery
Joyceville, Frontenac County, Ontario.

It is a fairly substantial looking memorial, is it possible Jane may be buried there as well ?
Could it be worth making enquiries in that direction ?  It may even show Francis in that same cemetery.

FIND A GRAVE

Added - Just took a second look at that cemetery, other Johnston burials ??

Gerrard 1828 - 1906
Henry 1825 - 1912

I have been looking for a phone number but can’t find one. Best would be snail mail. Or one can download a digital version of burials here for $5.00.

Thank you. I was finally able to pick up your message after Rootschat being out of service for about 10 days. The death of Francis is not posted on the Sandhill Presbyterian website although I wouldn’t be surprised if he is there.
