William G Barnes

I'm not sure I am in the right place but a friend of mine recently found a postcard from a William G Barnes saying he was being sent to France. I have found a William Gregory Barnes on census with parents Emma and William and later Wife Elsie who is mentioned in the postcard. The address on the postcard is 69 St Paul's Terrece Holgate Rd York same as on the 1911 census. I found a marriage to Elsie in 1912. The only thing I am struggling to find is William's military record. He survived the war and went on to have 2 children and was a coach painter. If anyone can help with the military stuff it would be most appreciated thank you in advance x

Have you looked on Ancestry/FindMyPast?  Which regiment was he in?  Do you have his service number?  What was his birthyear?

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz.  Those that survived are on the subscription sites.  Only one for a William George Barnes is shown

The Medal Roll Index has a lot of entries for William G Barnes.  Only 2 show full middle name - neither is Gregory

All I have is that he was born in 1887 in Yorkshire.

As an aside, a coachpainter in a railway town rang a bell with me.  I have previously found a coachpainter, later becoming a signwriter, in Doncaster living adjacent to the GNER Plant Works.  So I checked the map for St Paul's Terrace - next to the NER Carriage Works.  I suggest there may have been plenty of work for coachpainters there.
